Why did my cat die suddenly after a bath? Was it lung fluid?

My condolences on the loss of your cat. Without a post mortem exam, the cause can be difficult, if not impossible, to determine. Potential causes include cardiac conditions (including congenital defects), toxicity, infection or trauma.

Hello and I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your kitty. It is so heart breaking to lose them. Without an autopsy, one can't be certain, but most often in a cat without any other clinical signs, it's usually a bad heart that will cause sudden death. One of the most most common heart diseases in cats is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It often has no symptoms. It is often not detectable on a physical exam. Sometimes there will be fluid in the lungs from congestion in the lungs that can leak out after passing. I hope this helps to provide some closure and with time, I hope your heart heals. He may have had an injury, been hit by a car or he had a congenital heart defect that caused a blood clot at the bifurcation of the aorta (that paralyses hind legs and hurts terribly). This can also cause a clot in the lungs which would cause breathing problems. Unfortunately most cats with these blood clots die within a short time. I am so sorry for your loss. This is very sad.

I'm so very sorry for your loss of Rosie. There isn't any way to know what Rosie died from without an autopsy, but the most common cause of sudden death in young cats is heart disease. The signs you described seeing a month ago may have been due to an episode of heart disease that she recovered from. Unfortunately, there often isn't any way to know that a cat has heart disease without performing an ultrasound of the heart. Many of these cats never have any heart murmur or any other signs of disease until they die. I'm so very sorry for your loss of Rosie, but that type of heart disease is generally a very fast death and is not treatable even if caught early, so I don't think there is anything you could have done differently.

Hi, I am really sorry to hear this. It is difficult to understand what could have happened, I think maybe a blood clot ? As these can cause sudden death. However without having checked her over and without a full clinical history it is difficult to understand exactly what could have happened. I’m so sorry this happened to your friend! I would actually guess that Smokey was coughing and not trying to pass a hairball. Coughing is commonly seen with feline asthma and other respiratory diseases, and a cat who is coughing looks very similar to a cat who is attempting to vomit. Asthma and heart failure can appear suddenly and quickly cause respiratory failure and death. There are many other possibilities as well, and if your friend wants to know for certain the cause of death they might be able to have their vet perform a post mortem exam (autopsy).

I'm so sorry you suddenly lost your cat! Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what caused her to pass away, but I can make some guesses. In senior cats, cancer is common, and because our animals can't tell us what is going on with them, oftentimes we find that they are suffering from cancer but we don't know it until it's too late. It could be possible that your kitty had cancer, and it ultimately took her life. She could have also been suffering from kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or other organ failure.
