My cat keeps sticking out his tongue. Is it plaque? What to do?

He may have an ulcer or sore in his mouth or on his tongue that is painful and burning. They often do not want their mouth opened or touched when that occurs. It creates an infection and the odor occurs and gets worse. I would schedule an appointment with your vet to have his mouth and teeth examined to see if there are any wounds or damaged teeth causing this in order to get proper medication

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is adorable! Some cats do this and it is normal. It doesn't usually indicate that they are sick. They tend to stick a bit of their tongue out when they are relaxed and/or sleeping. It isn't an indication of stress. Sometimes it goes away with age. Please know that without seeing Cally in person, I can't say what is going on. In cats, laryngitis can cause a sudden loss of voice without sounding hoarse, so that could be possible. Sticking the tongue out can be a sign of dental disease, but it could also be she is feeling nauseous. I'd have your dad take her into a vet for a health check. I hope this helps!

It could just be normal for him but you should have a vet do an oral examination to make sure he doesn't have a dental problem and/or a problem with the his jaw. If your vet doesn't identify a problem and he is eating and drinking fine then it is probably just normal for him.

Hi. It sounds like Oliver has some severe dental disease. He most likely has gingivitis and possibly a painful, loose, or resorptive lesions on some teeth. Dental disease in cats can cause pain and discomfort.  This could impact quality of life. In some cases, the dental disease can cause a cat to stop eating. For dental disease, besides brushing teeth with pet toothpaste daily,  your veterinarian will recommend removing plaque and mineral buildup by scaling and polishing the teeth. Teeth will try to be saved wherever possible. In extreme cases, extraction of teeth might be needed.  Unfortunately a veterinarian will need to be involved. And upper respiratory tract infection, if untreated correctly, can lead to pneumonia or severe bronchitis. I urge you to contact your regular veterinarian and make an appointment for them to do a full physical examination on your cat as soon as possible. Your vet will be able to put you on the correct regimen of drugs such as antibiotics, steroids, bronchodilators, nebulizers, etc. that will help eliminate your disease and help the cat breathe better. It may be a resorptive lesion on the tooth. This is an indicator of dental disease. They can be painful, so a visit to your veterinarian would be recommended. Tinsel may need a complete dental cleaning.
