Why is my cat squatting in the litter box but only peeing little?

If Lumi is only passing small amounts of urine he could have cystitis (bladder inflammation), crystals in his urine, bladder stones or even a UTI. Since Lumi is a male cat he has the risk of obstructing and not being able to urinate at all. A urinary obstruction is life threatening. I recommend that he see a Vet today to relieve his discomfort and prevent it from worsening. I hope this helps and I wish Lumi the best!

Sometimes that can be true. Although infections, crystals in the urine, bladder stones, basically anything that causes irritation to the bladder can also cause this. In general, bladder inflammation is the more common reason that cats will only urinate small quantitates. Since it hurts, they will urinate more frequently. I hope this helps!

Male cats can develop a urinary obstruction, which is an emergency condition that needs to be evaluated right away, as it can be fatal. Otherwise, cats can develop bladder crystals, a urinary tract infection, or cystitis (an inflammation of the bladder). If there is a chance Vito has a urinary obstruction, I would have him seen immediately. Good luck!

Hello, thank you for your question about Atticus. The symptoms that you are describing could be indicative of two possibilities - constipation or urinary obstruction. Urinary obstruction is much more common in male cats due to their anatomy; however, if Atticus had an underlying condition such as bladder stones, she could experience an obstruction. Constipation is a not uncommon condition in cats. It can have many different underlying causes. Since Atticus is otherwise acting normally I would recommend continuing to monitor her for the next 12-24 hours. If she continues to go in/out of the box and does not produce any urine/feces or she develops any other symptoms (lethargy, vomiting, inappetance) I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. Other worrisome signs are weight loss, vomiting and changes in activity level. Urinary tract infections are rare in male cats, but will typically result in smaller than normal urine spots in the box. Straining or crying in the box are other reasons to see a veterinarian. If he cannot produce any urine at all, that would be a true emergency. It sounds like he does not have any of these symptoms. I suspect that he is getting the majority of his fluid from his diet. I hope this information helps!

I would recommend having Paws examined by a vet. Sometimes cats will start to feel sluggish and uncomfortable in the litter box if they have a UTI, bladder stones, some inflammatory conditions, or constipation. Since you aren't seeing much in the box, it is hard to determine which is the case, but a vet should be able to figure it out on physical exam.
