My cat is spitting out food and having trouble swallowing. What to do?

I would feed her soft canned food until you are able to get her evaluated by your veterinarian. She could have an injury, an abscess, or even a tumor that could be inhibiting her swallowing. AT her age there may be an infection or mild obstruction causing the problem. If there is no improvement, then she may need to be sedated to get xrays on her neck and throat and a good exam down her throat to check for anything abnormal. If there was something irritating it at one point, then this will be evident and they can adjust medicine to help get her better.

I'm sorry to hear that your cat isn't quite right. I would be concerned about a tumor or polyp in her throat/mouth, or possibly that she's retching, without actually vomiting. I would agree that getting her to the vet soon (in the next few days, as possible with the holiday) would be wise.

This sounds like your cat has an abscess, foreign body, naso-or oro-pharyngeal polyps, or ulcer or other type of purulent infection in her throat. She will need to be seen by a veterinarian who will need to thoroughly inspect her throat and upper airway, possibly under sedation and then remove the offending problem or lance an abscess. Hello. You should try to get her into a carrier, box, or something that will restrain her & get her to a veterinarian. If you cannot get her to the vet, she will quite sick if she is unable to eat. She probably has swollen lymph nodes from a sore throat or cold. She may have a mild fever causing the lethargy. I would warm the wet food, have fresh water available and let her rest. If she gets worse then a veterinary exam is recommended. Usually they will recover from a cold in a week or so. It sounds painful for her :( Honestly, she probably does have a bad tooth (or teeth). You should get her to your vet for an exam so they can get a better look inside her mouth. It is also very common for cats to ulcers/tumors in their mouth so that is another option. Your vet can check for this as well. In the meantime you can feed her soft foods like canned food or human baby food. The other option is to put warm water on the dry food and let it soak for a few minutes to soften it before feeding it to her.
