My cat is sneezing and drooling. When should I take my cat to the vet?

Sneezing and drooling can be from many different things. It is not recommended that you give your cat any over the counter medications as most are toxic to cats. If his symptoms persist for longer than 24 hours then he should see a vet. It could be an upper respiratory infection or he may have a dental/tooth infection. He could have ingested or inhaled something toxic. I cannot say for sure.

This is likely the start of an upper respiratory infection. These are often due to a virus that is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own - much like a cold with people). These can become worse and complicated with bacterial infections, so if Alexa is having issues with congestion, or starts to develop yellow/green nose or eye discharge, then it will be best to take her to a vet for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. For now, make sure she is comfortable and free of any stressful situations. This may be from an allergy or a sinus or upper respiratory infection. It is common in cats and quickly can progress to a decreased appetite and lethargy. Most respiratory infections in cats are from viral infections that can be contagious to other cats. If he is eating still, then you can make an appointment with your vet and do no need to get him treated as an emergency

Poor guy. He sounds like he may have a severe upper respiratory infection and it is worrisome that he is also coughing. I would most certainly take him in to be seen. The vet will do a proper exam and testing (if needed) to determine the extent of the infection and also to make sure nothing more serious is going on here, such as asthma. I would have Neptune seen by a vet tomorrow for a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis. With these tests, the vet can diagnose what is causing his sneezing and drooling, and can discuss treatment options with you. If, for example, he had dental problems, then he would benefit from a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing.

It sounds like Samson has an upper respiratory virus that he was incubating, & the stress of moving into a new home with unfamiliar sights, sounds & people has impacted his immune system resulting in clinical signs. I cannot say if this is a watch & see situation. Often the symptoms of a mild upper respiratory infection will go away in a few weeks. But if he is not eating nor acting well, he may need medications to get over this. If you are concerned, it is always best to have Samson evaluated before he gets into a more difficult situation.
