My cat has new sneezes, discharge after steroid for head tilt.

Hello. It is more likely that Katniss's symptoms are related more to the ear cleaning than anything else, as there is no way a nail trim could cause neurological signs unless your cat was handled very roughly, & I hope this is not so. Anything placed in the ear could potentially cause enough irritation to result in the signs of vestibular syndrome. If no medications were instilled in the ears, then the symptoms should subside In 3-5 days. In addition to the medications prescribed, I might have added something for nausea ( like Cerenia ) just to make sure Katniss continues to eat well. Unfortunately, there is no strict timeline as to when she may totally recover, but if she is not significantly better by Monday, then I might be thinking about recommending a CAT scan or MRI to evaluate what is going on in her inner ear canal. Hopefully she will start to feel & act better with each passing day, but if not, you may need to pursue some advanced diagnostics. This sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection that is making her sneeze and vomit from the sneezing, coughing and nasal discharge. Generally cats get over colds in a week or so without treatment. Since Mieko is seventeen I’m more concerned about her since she could become dehydrated if she’s not eating and drinking normally due to having a head cold. I do recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. She may need fluids under the skin to keep her hydrated and perhaps medication to stimulate her appetite. Often dogs and cats vomit when they have a cough so I don’t think the vomiting is the main concern but certainly does need to be addressed if it continues. In the meantime you can use a warm damp cloth to keep her nose and eyes clean of discharge and heat up small meals of wet food with added water to keep her eating. I put it in the microwave for eight seconds which brings out the aroma since cats often stop eating when they can’t smell the food. If she’s not had senior blood work recently they may recommend that also to check her kidney and liver function, and check for anemia and infection. Antibiotics are given only when a viral cold turns into a secondary bacterial infection. You are right to be concerned with an elderly cat so please take her in for treatment so she can get over this quickly. I'm sorry to hear that Titan has had this problem after his vet visit. I certainly can't tell you the reason for sure, but if Titan has ever had an upper respiratory infection, that virus can live in the body and can be "re-activated" by steroids. If the eye discharge is worsening, his eye is swollen, he is holding his eye shut, the discharge becomes yellow or green, or Titan is not eating, then I would certainly have your veterinarian examine him again. I'm sorry to hear that Mazy isn't feeling well! With her sneezing and watery eyes, it's most likely that Mazy is experiencing an upper respiratory infection (URI). These infections are most commonly caused by herpesvirus or calicivirus, and these viruses tend to shed and cause problems during times of stress, such as surgery and/or moving to a new home. (Don't worry - these viruses are not contagious to people!) While the viruses just need time to run their course, some cats can develop secondary bacterial infections as well. It would be best to take her to the vet for an exam. Did you change her food when you brought her home last week? Sudden diet changes can cause some stomach upset for many animals, which can lead to some vomiting. Other causes of vomiting can include parasites, gastroenteritis from eating something unusual, pancreatitis, among many other issues. You can try to offer her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken for a few days before gradually mixing in her regular food over another 5-7 days. Also be sure to mention this issue to her vet when she gets checked out for the upper respiratory issues. I hope that she feels better soon!

Poor kitty! From your description, it does sound like she may have a respiratory infection, but it's concerning to me that she walks in circles and can't walk straight for long. This can be a sign of vestibular disease, and it can be caused by an ear infection, ear polyps, infection of the brain, or toxicity among other causes. Due to this, I feel it's best that your kitty sees the vet right away to diagnose what is causing these neurological symptoms so she can be treated. While there, the vet can diagnose if she does have a respiratory infection, and prescribe medications for her. There are a few things that you can do at home that will work in conjunction with medications from the vet for a respiratory infection. First, you can try starting her on an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight. If she's congested, you can also try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

I am sorry to hear about your kitty. I would consider some diagnostics since Anna has not improved on the medication trials performed thus far. Dental x-rays would be my next step, to ensure there isn't an infected tooth root that could be causing these issues. It is not always obvious looking in the oral cavity that a tooth is diseased. The x-ray may also help detect any bony changes in the skull that could occur with certain types of tumors. Other options you may discuss with your vet would include antihistamine trials, a drug called Cerenia which can be used to formulate nose drops that can decrease inflammation in the nasal passages, a nasal flush and culture to check for resistant bacteria or fungus, and prophylactic treatment for possible nasal mites. CT scan is also recommended in nonresponsive cases when other options have been exaughsted. You may also consider referral to an internist if your vet is having trouble finding a cause/treatment that works. A blood test must be done ASAP, i don't understand why your vet gave him a cortisone shot, it's a contraindication for almost every symptom he is experiencing. a blood test must be done urgently to rule out kidney failure which is common in cats at this age.
