My cat sleeps too much. How can I get my lazy cat to play more?

Oh he is a gorgeous big boy! But it's good to want to encourage Mars to play more. House cats tend to have weight problems and exercise is great. Try to find something that stimulates him. Will he chase a laser dot or does he like feather toys. Some cats will learn to play fetch with foil ball cat toys. Experiment to see what catches Mars' attention and get him to play with you. One other thought of he's overweight. Canned cat food may be better overall than dry kibble. Talk to you vet about the best diet for him to be on to prevent weight gain. Good luck and have fun!

Some cats are happy with companionship and aren't interested in play. I’ve had luck with using a laser pointer to see if he’ll chase it. You can also try putting treats on a cat tree to get him to climb up and be active. You can also train cats to come when called, beg, sit, shake etc just like a dog. This is done with treats and praise as rewards and takes lots of time. The training should be fun for you both and is good bonding and quality time together. This is a common issue since cats are nocturnal. They sleep al day and are up al night. There are a few ways to deal with this. You can lock him in a room or basement at night so he cannot disrupt you. If you do his make sure he has access to food, water and a litter box. Another way is to make sure he doesn't sleep during this day. There are many toys and stuff you can use to tire a cat out. A great one is a laser. They also have automatic lasers so you can leave it on and he can entertain himself. Doing so will help to decrease the potential development for destructive or inappropriate behaviors, such as inappropriate scratching, aggressiveness, inappropriate litterbox habits. Lethargy in cats can be due to a variety of reasons, including heart disease, urinary issues, an infection, behavioral reasons, or an underlying medical issue (kidney disease, diabetes, etc), among others. If this behavior has been persistent, I would recommend Spencer be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to see if there is a medical cause for what you are seeing, have any necessary testing done (bloodwork, xrays), and determine if a treatment plan is needed from there. This could be difficult to assess how much is the new kitten and how much is Opie getting older and just not being as playful. First make sure you are feeding a high quality cat food to give Opie plenty of energy. I like Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. Second, try to find new toys that Opie seems to enjoy. Don't keep these toys out all the time as he will get bored with them. Try a laser pointer or other toys that stimulate the predatory response. You could also try feeding him with a treat ball so that he has to work/think to get his food. This helps to stimulate his brain.
