My cat is sleeping a lot and not active when awake. Is she sick?

Kitty is sleeping a lot since 2 days and not so active even when she is awake

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Sleeping and decreased energy can be signs of a cat feeling unwell. This can be caused by weakness, fever, kidney disease, and other causes. It is a very vague sign that could be many many things.

I recommend that you have Kitty seen by your vet, and they might want to do some bloodwork.

That could be because of fever, worms, infection and more. Please, take Kitty to your local vets for an appointment. She may need to be de-wormed, she may need anti-inflammatory medications and /or a course of antibiotics if there is evidence of ongoing infection.

A decrease in activity level in a kitten could be a signal of a potential health problem especially if this has been a change you have noticed recently. There can be a lot of medical causes for decreased energy or activity that will need to be ruled out with Smrdo's veterinarian soon. Parasitic infections, viral or bacterial infections common in kittens could be potential causes. Your veterinarian will do a full exam and may recommend testing Smrdo's stool and possibly running blood work as well depending.

Causes for lethargic kittens are: fever from viral infections which can be GI or upper respiratory. There are more serious viral infections like panleukopenia, feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline infectious peritonitis. She could be nauseous from eating something she shouldn't have or from worms or she ate something that is stuck. I recommend you have your Vet examine her if she doesn't start to perk up. Since this is a new behavior, he should be examined by his veterinarian to help figure out what is wrong. Also watch closely to see if he has other signs such as not eating, not drinking, vomiting, or diarrhea. This may help guide your veterinarian to the cause of the problem.

This could also be normal in a kitten as they are not always very active at that age. Sleeping more than normal for more than one day is not normal. Sometimes a cat may sleep more after a busy night out. However if this lasts through the weekend or if your cat stops eating or appears lethargic, you should take her to your vet on Monday for an exam and possibly a blood test.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Cats are notoriously good at hiding their signs of pain and illness. Often the only indication is a decrease in energy and appetite. Possible causes could include pancreatitis, systemic infection, gut parasites, or dental or abdominal pain. If her symptoms are not improving within the next 24 hours, I would recommend taking her to the vet. They can perform a full physical exam, checking for any areas of pain or discomfort, and check for fever and dehydration. They may recommend bloodwork and viral testing to pinpoint a diagnosis. At minimum, they can help rehydrate her if she is dehydrated, and offer medications to improve her appetite and comfort while searching for a diagnosis. In the meantime, offer her some other wet and dry food options in case she has just become picky with her food, and monitor her for any vomiting or diarrhea. As long as he is eating and drinking, and using the litter box, I would monitor him for now. If he stops eating, stays very lethargic over the next 24 hours, stops drinking water, stops using the litter box, or develops other symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, I would take him into a vet right away.
