My cat is sleeping a lot after Metronidazole. Is this normal?

Lethargy (loss of energy) following a dose of metronidazloe is a sign of a possible drug reaction. Her biting everything could be a sign of discomfort? This is quite an unusual symptom, so it is hard to say for sure. Most of the time a reaction to Metronidazole involves any of the following: neurological symptoms (i.e. seizure, head tilt, etc), stomach upset (vomiting and or diarrhea) and lethargy. I would suggests calling your vet in the morning to ask if the medication should be continued. They likely will have you stop the medication and try an alternative one. It would not be a good idea to stop metronidazole now and the symptoms may come back. Please, complete 5 days of treatment and then double-check with your vet that it is ok to stop the medication. The dose of metronidazole Leo was prescribed is ok (100mg every 12hrs).

Prednisone can absolutely cause behavior changes and mood alterations. The side effects are usually at their greatest during the first two to four week of therapy as the body grows accustomed to glucocorticoid drugs. The metronidazole is not likely a cause of any side effects you are currently seeing. If you are consulting with a oncologist regarding Pepe's case, do not hesitate to contact them with any questions involving his therapy. In addition to its antibiotic properties, this medication can have some anti-inflammatory effect especially in the gut. If the head jerking is continuous then I would recommend taking Casper in to the vet to be checked out. Some pets can have an adverse reaction to metronidazole that causes neurological symptoms. If Casper had only one episode and it resolved quickly and uneventfully then I would not worry about it too much.

It could be that the diarrhea worsening is independent of the metronidazole as this drug does not help all cases of diarrhea, dependent on the cause. But since it is new it would be best to stop until you can speak with your vet. Has your kitty had a work up for these symptoms? Chronic vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms of several things, but most notably GI disease. It would be abnormal for a cat to need chronic medication for vomiting unless there is a disease process there. Just to help a little, a work up for an older kitty with these signs could include bloodwork with thyroid testing, an abdominal ultrasound, and sampling if needed (dependent on ultrasound). If there is an underlying disease that can be treated your kitty may feel better and need less medications eventually. Depending on the extent of flea infestation, lethargy is not at all uncommon. Flea bites can drain a significant amount of blood and nutrients from the body, so when a severe attack as occurred, what you are describing is very much expected. If the exposure was not significant, it is possible that Milo may just be having a reaction to the medication itself. If this is the case, he should come out of it relatively soon. If not, I would have him reassessed by your veterinarian that prescribed the drug. Hope this helps.
