My 12-year-old cat sits with her mouth open. Should I worry?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 lbs

Hi, my cat occasionally sits with her mouth open, it's only every so often and usually only at night, is it anything to worry about? I've heard it can be an indication of infection or just her smelling the environment. Her eating habits haven't changed and neither has her behaviour. Also, she's 12 years old Thank you

At 12 years old and being that this is a new problem I would have M checked out by your vet. Your vet may be able to hear something going on with her heart or lungs by listening to her chest with a stethoscope. Some x-rays of her chest may be needed. It is better to be safe than sorry. I would not wait until it becomes a more constant problem.

You may be right, she could just be smelling something in the environment. It is best to rule out a medical issue before just assuming it's behavioral.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
