My cat's head tilts, eyes twitch, mouth opens. What's wrong with him?

Hello. These symptoms do not throw up any red flags, & certainly not something that would show up in routine blood work. It is possible ( very slightly possible ) that this might be a very small focal seizure, definitely nothing I would recommend any kind of treatment or medication for at this time. With the mild gingivitis seen, this might also cause Mercy to respond in an odd way, or perhaps she has some underlying dental disease not apparent on the surface. Only a full set of dental x-rays would show problems below the jaw line. I think this just bears watching as long as it does not interfere with Mercy's ability to eat & interact with her family in a normal manner. In any cat this can be a sign of a neurological problem, vestibular disease or an inner ear infection. No one knows what causes vestibular disease but it does often get better with time and treatment. Inner ear infections are also treatable with medication. At your cats age I would be worry about a brain disease such as a tumor or vascular disease to cause these symptoms. She does need to see a vet as soon as possible to see what the problem is and your potential prognosis. They can start medicine to help calm her and minimize the symtpoms

Oh my. These are all very serious symptoms, especially for a cat. They can indicate he could have a number of things going on including: a stroke, seizure, vestibular disease or even brain cancer. He should be seen right away by your vet for diagnotic testing (i.e. bloodwork, radiographs) if you want to pursue any possible treatment options for him. I'm glad your kitty's kidneys are normal at this time. Facial or head twitching can be due to electrolyte abnormalities, particularly if your kitty's potassium is low. This can occur with kidney dysfunction. I recommend repeating lab work to check electrolytes and kidney values as soon as possible. Particularly since your are seeing Shadow drink excess water and vomiting; both very common with kidney disease. Another cause of head twitching is seizure activity, specifically a focal seizure. I recommend making a recording of what you are seeing at home to show your regular veterinarian in case it doesn't happen all the time. If Shadow is experiencing focal seizures, there can be several causes ranging from organ or endocrine diseases to cancer in the brain or spinal cord. I recommend having Shadow seen by your regular veterinarian as soon as possible.

It sounds like she is having a Vestibular event, this is when the balance center is off and they feel like the world is spinning. They can see but the abnormal eye twitching is called nystagmus. The most common cause in a young kitten is a deep ear infection or a nasopharyngeal polyp. She is growling because she is scared and stressed. Be careful and do not get bit. Use a towel or large blanket to get her in the carrier. Gently place it over her body and scoop her up and put her in the carrier. I wish you the best!

He may be having vision problems, high blood pressure or might have had a seizure. If his pupils are wide open, please take him to an out of hours or emergency veterinarian now. He may have high blood pressure and fast intervention can reverse any blindness caused by this. If his pupils are normal and react normally, take him to a vet tomorrow for an exam.

At 12 years old and being that this is a new problem I would have M checked out by your vet. Your vet may be able to hear something going on with her heart or lungs by listening to her chest with a stethoscope. Some x-rays of her chest may be needed. It is better to be safe than sorry. I would not wait until it becomes a more constant problem. You may be right, she could just be smelling something in the environment.
