My cat is very sick, not eating, losing weight. What else could it be?

Thank you for your post! I am sorry to hear Shurbee is not doing well. My concern at this age would be some type of malignancy. In older cats, one of the more common things we see in regards to cancer is intestinal / GI lymphoma. This does not always show up on blood work. I would highly recommend Shurbee get an abdominal ultrasound as the next diagnostic step. Hope this helps and feel free to contact me with any further questions / concerns

Poor Larry! It sounds like it’s time to move onto further diagnostics. Obviously something is wrong and it just hasn’t been discovered yet. I recommend to discuss an abdominal ultrasound with your veterinarian and possibly checking a fructosamine level to see if the blood sugars have been elevated over the past month. This will help to figure out if diabetes, pancreatitis, cancer or inflammatory bowel disease is present. I hope this gets figured out quickly. Poor Sachi! Significant weight loss and inappetence are certainly a major concern. I'm glad to hear that his blood work (I assume a CBC, chemistry and T4?) was unremarkable. However, foreign body intestinal obstruction/blockages, intestinal malabsorption issues that can cause inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), chronic pancreatitis, or cancerous processes, do not necessarily cause changes on screening blood tests. If Sachi has not yet had abdominal x-rays or an ultrasound, consider talking to your vet about these tests as his next diagnostic step. If he has a foreign body obstructing his intestines, this is a surgical emergency, and these tests would be helpful in obtaining a diagnosis. If pancreatitis, IBD or EPI are more highly suspected, consider talking to your vet about testing for vitamins B12 and folate, as well as TLI and fPLI. I hope this helps!

I would be sure fecal testing has been done and feline leukemia/FIV testing, chest X-rays, B12/folate/TLI/PLI testing then I would take him to surgery to explore his abdominal cavity and I would biopsy everything. Looking for lymphoma. He should have a feeding tube (esophageal) placed a surgery so he can be fed while you wait for biopsy results. Also if it has been more than 1 month since the CBC/Chemistry has been ran I would repeat it. I wish you the best

I doubt very much that the litter change had anything to do with the signs you are currently seeing in Misu. Lack of appetite and not drinking water are both serious problems that could be caused by pain, nausea, internal organ problems (like kidneys or liver), or intestinal issues. Unfortunately these are very vague signs and he will need some tests, like bloodwork, urinalysis, and possibly x-rays to determine what is going on, and how to treat it. I urge you to call again and make an urgent appointment, or take him on to see an emergency veterinarian tonight.

I believe these very general symptoms are very worrying, i cannot tell you what is the cause as there are many options but i strongly advise that you take him to the vet urgently to have a blood test done and get this checked.

I am very sorry to hear about Evie! There are many different conditions which can cause these symptoms in cats. Some of these would include diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, infections, intestinal cancer or other cancers, and more. Without doing an examination and getting more detailed history, we cannot give a more precise answer. I would highly recommend getting Evie to the vet as soon as possible. They can examine her and will likely recommend some testing such as bloodwork to try to determine what is causing her illness and if it can be treated. Best of luck to you and Evie.
