My cat is very sick, not eating, breathing fast. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 years and 7 months old

Hello, I found my baby who is two years old this morning lying down and who was not responding when I called him, just to discover that he was breathing quickly and his eyes remained wide open,(and meowed loudly while I held him). He was not likely to eat or drink anything. I tried giving him something to drink with a syringe, but he spit more than he swallowed. I find him really skinny comapred to a week ago. Also it’s been since staurday that he stopped eating. WHAT CAN I DO? Help please.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. If possible, you need to seek veterinary care for him immediately. He appears very sick in your pictures and your description. He will likely need blood work and x-rays of his chest to determine why he is so sick. In the meantime, place karo or maple syrup on his gums. This will help if his blood sugar has dropped too low. It will give him a little energy. He will still need care though. I hope this information helps.

This sounds serious, it could be due to many things. Sam could have diabetes, a kidney problem, heart or lung issues, hyperthyroidism, or an infection or cancer. Cats usually do not show signs of illness until it is severe so please take Sam in soon so they can do an exam and a blood panel to determine the diagnosis. Then they can start treatment right away. Sam is probably dehydrated and needs fluids also. Many problems can be treated and Sam will hopefully recover quickly once the medical problem has been diagnosed and treated. Poor cat. He is very young to have so many health concerns. Your kitty's symptoms are almost indicative of "shock" symptoms and this is very concerning. Based on the severity of your cats condition I am highly recommending you take him to your vet asap for some blood tests, physical exam and medical intervention at this point to help stabilize him. I am suspicious of a congenital kidney defect here if the breathe is acidotic. I hope that you get him the care he needs soon and that he can recover from this. Best wishes!

Vomiting and inappetence are concerning symptoms as they could occur with things like a gastrointestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, among many other possibilities. The fact that he is also breathing fast is also concerning. I recommend that you have Pedrito evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

My cat won't eat, is losing weight, and has bad breath. What to do?

Squiggles need to see a vet. If he has lost that much weight my guess is he either has diabetes or kidney disease. He could also have a serious mouth/dental infection or even hepatic lipidosis. I'm sorry you think vets are expensive but there is a lot of overhead involved with running a vet clinic. The staff has to be paid, the utilities, all the medications, supplies and equipment. It is your responsibility to get him care when he is sick. Letting him suffer because of financial constraints is really not a good option. Not everything can be fixed at home. So, please get him evaluated by a vet and then you can go from there. If he has a severe disease and you cannot afford treatment then it would be best to humanely euthanize him.
