Will my cat get sick from items made in homes with other pets?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Female | spayed

I would like to buy items made by people on sites like Etsy.com for my cat like a collar, bed and toys but these people own cats and other pets of their own. I am worried that the items I purchase from them and bring into my home may get my cat sick from these peoples pets. Even if they never touched the item. I just want to know if that is even possible for animal to animal diseases to be transferred through items just by being in the same environment without having been touched by them.

Theoretically, yes things can be transmitted like ringworm if a cat hair with a spore attached gets stuck to the collar. I suspect this would be rare but not impossible. Be careful of collars. Cats need to wear the break away collars in case they get hung up to prevent strangling.
I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
