Why does my cat have a sensitive golf ball sized lump on her side?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tummy! Possible causes for a lump are: an abscess, a skin mass, or an internal mass in his belly. If Tummy has lost weight or is having any other change either behaviorally or appetite wise I recommend having him evaluated by your Vet. If the mass and in the skin (not the belly), is soft it is likely an abscess or a cyst. Sine this is a new finding I recommend having him seen by your Vet to be safe. It is likely to be a small mass in the skin, it could be infection, a cyst or fatty lump. There is always a chance that it could be a type of cancer so I would keep a close eye on it. If it gets bigger or changes shape I would have the vet to test it to determine the exact type of mass.

The most common lumps on cats are pockets of infection, or an abscess from a cat fight. An abscess is generally hot to the touch and painful and may cause a fever and lethargy. It also could be a tumor which often are non painful but can be malignant and will grow if not removed. Also some cats get a skin reaction to a vaccination if it’s given in that location and the swelling should improve over a week or so. I recommend a veterinary exam so they can feel the lump, take her temperature and decide if further treatment is needed. This is likely a mass and it should be examined by a veterinarian. Since it is apparently growing and bleeding because the skin is overstretching, it should also be removed surgically, whether it is benign or malignant. this should happen very soon, as the wound will be prone to bacterial infection. This is not heartworm. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian. She is a beautiful cat!

There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. This large lump needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take Chauncy to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the lump and send it to the lab for analysis (unless your vet sees some pus right away, in this case it's an abscess and can be treated on spot). when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.
