Why is my cat still scratching and losing weight after flea treatment?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 15 lbs

Our female cat is 10 years old and had fleas which we treated and she is clear and now she is continuing to scratch and has several sore spots, her fur has thinned and she has lost weight. She eats and drinks normally but does not look herself at all!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! George's itching can be caused by a reaction to the fleas, a secondary skin infection, ringworm, or other skin parasites such as mites. George may need antibiotics, medicated shampoo or ointments to resolve the issue completely. I recommend having her seen by her vet, who can take a sample of the affected areas to determine what is going on. I hope this helps and that all is well with you and George!
