Why is my indoor cat scratching her ear if she has no fleas or mites?

Tara is scratching and rubbing her ear possibly because she has something going on in that area. She might have flea infestation or ear mites infestation or an ear/skin infection. Fleas or mites would still be at the top of my list. Unless there are a very large number of mites, you may not always see them by just looking. Collecting a sample of ear wax and looking under a microscope can help you find a few, but often ear mite treatment is still used even when there is only suspicion and no actual evidence of ear mites. Fleas don't live on a pet, they only jump on at meal times, so it is easy for a cat owner to miss them - especially since cats are very good at grooming them off before you can see! I would talk to your vet about a prescription topical flea and mite treatment called Revolution. Since Frida Katio (wonderful name, btw!) is indoor/outdoor that lives in Texas (parasites love this state, too!), she should be on a good preventative year round. Other potential causes for the scratching and twitching include bacterial or yeast ear infection (would need diagnosis by looking under a microscope), nasopharyngeal polyp (may need an exam under anesthesia or using and endoscope), or other allergies, like environmental or food.

I recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have Mimi checked for an ear infection. He/she will likely perform an ear cytology, meaning he/she will swab her ear and look at the material under a microscope. Poor Missy looks like her skin is quite irritated! She requires a visit to the vet to determine the source of her itchiness. She could have an infection in her ear (bacteria, yeast, or both), ear mites, or allergies (to something in the environment like pollen/dust or to food) that is causing the inflammation. Your vet can look down inside the ear and possibly take a swab to examine under the microscope, and prescribe the appropriate treatment for her. Placing an e-collar on her until your vet is able to see her will help decrease the self-trauma she is causing.

Unfortunately some tests usually need to be run in order to attempt and find the cause of the scratching, the ears need to be inspected properly to rule out an ear infection, fleas also often cause this type of problem, and it could also be an allergy or some other skin parasites.

Since Love Bug is itching primarily around her neck you may consider that she has an ear infection. If her ears look red or inflammed or smell funny she may have an ear infection. If her ears looks clear, it could be allergies causing the problem. If she does have she may need medication to help alleviate the itch.
