My cat finds Science Diet Indoor kibble too big. What's smaller?

Thank you for submitting your question! Most indoor cats tend to be a bit over weight as a result of plenty of food and little exercise. First off, encourage plenty of play time. You can feed them on elevated surfaces so they have to jump up to get a meal. You can also hide kibble around the house (out of their pre-measured daily amount) to engage them in their natural hunting behavior. This is mentally stimulating for them and encourages more exercise. Science Diet is a high quality food and would be a good choice for them. I do not typically recommend grain free formulas as they are high in carbohydrates and result in weight gain. Measure the food daily for each cat and feed them separately (several small meals throughout the day). This way you will how much each cat is receiving. Lastly, feed them less than recommended for their weight bracket since they are both overweight. Good luck!

Size of kibble doesn't really matter in a health sense, however some cats and dogs do tend to prefer certain sizes vs. others, just like some people prefer or dislike certain textures of foods. Hi there and thank you for your post! The size of kibble may make it easier for a smaller dog to eat if the kibble bites are smaller. Sometimes, depending on the dog and Its preference for texture, some small dogs prefer large bites over small bites and some dogs prefer small bites over large bite. I would offer both types to see which one is preferred. There are no health benefits over eating small versus large kibble. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Any complete weight reduction food from companies like Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet or Purina would be suitable. You should also not free-feed your kitty but feed him twice a day according to the instructions on the bag.

Hi Ali! Thanks for using Pet Coach! I suggest you take her off the kitten food. Kitten food is very high in calories. I know that bag is labeled for up to one year but I usually recommend that kittens switch to adult food at 7-8 months of age. So, yes, adult indoor food would be indicated here. Also, do not just keep the bowl full - measure out the daily amount she needs based on the recommendations on the bag of food you are feeding; split into multiple small meals. Feed her to her ideal weight and not her current weight. Example: if she is 12 pounds and should be 9 pounds then use the feeding recommendation for a 9 pound cat. Always feed to the low end of the range the bag gives you especially since you are giving hearts and kidneys as well. It is the Science Diet metabolic weight management diet. If you wish to not use a weight loss diet then any of the Science Diet foods for adult cats would be great for him.
