My cat has salmonella, but my vet says no treatment. Is there one?

Salmonella poisoning can be lifethreatening for several reasons - the infection can spread to the rest of the body (sepsis) and result in severe dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea. If you believe that Furby is having any of these signs, he should be seen by a vet immediately for supportive care. He may need IV medications, and antibiotics depending on the bacterial infection (E. coli, Campylobacter, and Helicobacter can be to blame as well). I do not recommend giving Furby antibiotics for humans, as they may be toxic.

Hello! Thank you for posting your question! If you haven't tried pepto bismol, you can give that a try and give Rosie 2tsp every 8hrs. I would also begin a bland diet such as boiled chicken breast and rice until the diarrhea resolves. You can also try and add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. I would not give the pepto bismol for more than 24 hours. If the diarrhea is worsening and not resolving, i would bring a stool sample to your vet to have it tested. There are other medications that your vet will habe to help resolve the diarrhea. If Rosie ate something she normally doesn't eat, this could have caused a dietary indiscretion. Without seeing Z in person, I can't say what is the best course of treatment for him. I'd trust your vet's decision, but if you do have questions, you can always take him into another vet for a second opinion.

There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Hopefully Salam will not have any problem with the new food but definitely probiotics would be my advice. At the moment I wouldn't add anything else, just focus on cat flu treatment and make sure he continue to love his new food (sometimes cats can become inappetent when having flu as cannot smell properly their meal)! Campylobacter is a bacteria that can be transmitted from animals to people, but if the cat is not having diarrhea, then there is no need to treat him for it. If he is having diarrhea, then it would be best to have your vet evaluate him sometime soon. I hope that helps and all is well with Ben.
