Why is my cat so rough with her 1-month-old kittens? Should I separate?

It can be normal for a mother to gently bite at a kitten, but if you feel Mum is being aggressive it may be best to allow supervised interactions only so you can intervene if she gets too rough. It is very beneficial for kittens to have time with their mothers, so I would only recommend completely isolating kitten from Mum if she is consistently showing signs of aggression.

The best thing to do is to allow the kittens to play together but when the play is begins to turn rough immediately separate them. This way your cat will begin to understand that this particular behavior (rough play) will result in a negative outcome (not getting to play). It will probably take several times of doing this for him to understand but he should get the hang of it soon enough. I hope this helps. Pregnancy can be a very stressful time for animals, and it may be hard for your cat to be separate from her previous offspring. However, my recommendation would be to separate him from her so that he cannot suckle/breastfeed from her before her kittens are born. The milk produced at the beginning of lactation is very antibody-rich and important for the brand new kittens to ingest. There is also the possibility that the previous offspring could out-compete the brand new kittens for nipples if they are left together. The new kittens will need the most care and nutrition from the very beginning, and if he is allowed to suckle from the mom, the newest kittens may not get all of the nutrition they need. Thanks for providing photos; Shunu is adorable! I think your instincts are correct in that even though Queen wants to play, at one month of age Shunu is in danger of being injured. Queen may not understand how to play with a kitten so young and fragile, and it's very possible that as a stray, Shunu didn't get the benefit of learning how to set boundaries with playmates that she would have gotten had she been raised with her mother and littermates. At this point your best course of action is to keep them separated, at least until Shunu is a couple of weeks older. You don't have to put them in completely separate parts of the house, but just make sure that Queen can't play on the floor with Shunu or chase her. Soon enough Shunu will learn how to send signals to playmates, and Queen will start to understand the boundaries. When you do start letting them play, supervise closely.

Most cats will settle down within a few weeks. Kittens do play rough and it can be hard to tell. If they willingly come together, play willingly and you don't see any bullying behavior (avoidance, hiding, arching the back and puffing up the tail) they are likely playing rough. If they play too rough they could injure each other by accident so continue to separate them when not supervised but most kittens will not require this. Giving each kitten one on one play time with you to burn energy, feeding out of a food puzzle and providing cats trees/other environmental stimulation can also help. It is very normal for young pets to want to play a bit rough. If it is getting to be too intense, taking some "time outs" and having everyone settle down can help to reduce the behavior and give everyone a chance to relax. This can be done by removing them to different rooms, distracting them with a shared toy, or giving each a treat and letting them chew on it in different parts of the same room. Once calm, play can then resume. Playing with toys, combined training sessions, fetch items, or puzzle toys can also help encourage the two to work together and enjoy company without getting too rough.

If you are concerned that the male cat may injure the kittens then I would recommend you keep them separated at all times. However, I will say that it is normal for older cats (usually the momma cat) to teach the young kittens discipline and proper behavior by mewing at them, bopping them and nipping at them.
