When can my spayed kitten roam the house after her spay surgery?

The cat should be kept indoors in a small room the first night as she will probably be tired and wobbly on her feet after surgery. In a small room it is best so that way she won't injury herself. It is best to continue to keep her indoors for at least 10 days. Look at the incision daily to make it sure it is not red, swollen or having any discharge coming from it. If you notice any abnormalities call your vet. She should not be allowed to lick the incision. If she does, you will need to get her a cone collar to wear for 10 days or so. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Artemis. Most of the time, stitches are removed at 10-14 days post-surgery. By this point, she will be completely healed. The goal is no running, jumping or playing until this time. This is difficult with young kittens however. So do your best to limit her activities. It is fine if she sleeps with you at night if this is what she usually does. I would keep the bedroom door closed so that if she jumps off the bed, she is at least confined to the room. The surgery can make her slightly more prone to weight gain so watch her calorie intake. This is a greater problem in adult cats though. The surgery should not cause any behavioral changes. She may be slow and quiet on the day of the surgery, but on the following day she should be active and playful. You do not have to change her diet but you do need to put a head cone on her. She should not be allowed to go out until the wound is fully healed. Depending on the suturing technique, you may have to take her back to your vets in about 10 days time to remove the stitches.

It is normal that a kitten will be quieter than usual after a spay. It is an abdominal surgery, and it's important that she does stay as quiet as possible so she can heal correctly. Wearing an Ecollar can also lead them to be quieter than normal, as cats do not like them and act resigned to wearing them. As long as she eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't be too concerned about her but you can mention your concern with your vet at the appointment tomorrow. I hope this helps!

You really do want to limit Grey’s walking around and especially don’t allow her to jump. Go ahead and put her back in her room. It’s normal for cats to meow when they aren’t happy about being confined. Try visiting her in her room instead of her visiting in your room. Sounds like Pickle is pretty active! I would see if you could distract her with a toy that takes less movement (such as some kitty treats hidden inside something), or if you can get her to calm down with some gentle petting or brushing. If she gets too active, distracting her with something that requires less movement may also help. I would also just keep an eye on the suture site and check it a few times daily to make sure the sutures aren't pulling at it's still closing, even if she's a little more active. If they appear to be coming apart or infected, let your vet know as they may need to reclose it or give a short-term sedative to help keep her calmer.

Cats do not usually run away when spayed, however if in pain they may attempt to hide so that they can rest and relax. If your cat escaped outdoors it is best to find her as quickly as possible to make sure she does not harm the surgical site and if you find her, examine the site carefluly. If you notice bleeding/torn sutures she needs to return to the vet immediately. She needs to be kept indoors until the surgical site is completely healed up. If she is hiding in the house or under a bed, quietly looking for her is best. Once found, placing litter and food/water near her is a good idea so she can access them as needed. If she appears in a lot of pain, bringing her back to the vet for care or pain meds is needed.
