My cat has ringworm. Is 250mg terbinafine 2x daily too much?

Clotrimazole (Lotrimin) can be tried, with or without the steroid. It is always recommended to apply a thin layer of the product on the skin and allowing it to air dry for 20-30 minutes. The product should not be allowed to be licked by your pet during the drying timeframe, and gloves should be worn when handling this medication. Use care when treating a large area, smaller areas of application are preferred. If no improvement is seen within 7-14 days then most pets require an oral anti-fungal prescription medication from their veterinarian.

Miconazole and clotrimazole are the most common topical anti-fungal medications that we use for ringworm, but you will want to consult with your veterinarian before starting any treatment for ringworm to make sure that Pita Boo is confirmed to have ringworm, to make sure that he doesn't need oral medication as well and to make sure that the topical product is safe for cats. I would recommend taking Tigger to make sure mebendazole is the proper medication for him. Even though this is a dewormer and typically pretty safe 500mg is a large dose for a 5kg cat. It will be to hard to break this tablet to the appropriate dose for Tigger. Also mebendazole does not kill tapeworms so Tigger might need additional medication to deworm for tapeworms. I'm glad that Minou is safe after the scare with her liver! To treat ringworm, I will often use a special solution called a lime sulfur dip. The cats need to be fully immersed ion the liquid twice a week for 4-6 weeks. They need to wear an elizabethan collar while drying so they do not lick the solution off. As a warning, the lime sulfur dips smells like rotten eggs. It will also stain surfaces. However, it is effective and once the cat is dry, the smell is not as pungent. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should rub Lamisil into the skin as soon as you apply it. Creams get absorbed rapidly into the skin and rubbing it in will enhance absorption even more. Lamisil is not toxic when ingested but it may produce upset stomach, so your Batty may vomit if she keeps licking it. Licking the cream off may slow down the healing. If after 10-14 days there is no improvement to the skin, your vet may have to change the treatment to anti-fungal tablets.

Hello, sorry to hear about Burrikh. That medication is an antibiotic which is good for treating bacteria only. Ringworm unfortunately is a fungal organism that needs anti-fungals to treat (clotrimazole, ketoconazole, etc.) In addition, cats tend to not be able to tolerate tetracyclines well and can develop secondary signs such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. I would recommend that you do not apply this oral formulation externally as your kitten may be able to lick it and it will not treat ringworm disease. Hope this helps and best of luck.

The treatment is with an oral antifungal, it's not recommended if your kitten is asymptomatic as this medication can have severe side effects. The medication is prescription only and can be given only by your vet, in this specific case I do not believe any vet would recommend this treatment though.
