My cat has a red, raw nose and is sneezing. What can I do at home?

This looks very sore! In some cats a viral infection such as herpes can be involved, so ampling and testing the area can be very helpful as antviral drugs can be very effective. An Ecollar in the meantime will prevent her from clawing at the area and doing further damage, you could apply manuka hney to the area but I would not recommend using any medicated ointments etc as she will lick and swallow them!

Without photos it would be hard to say, but if it keeps reopening, has excessive discharge, or isn't healing it is best to have a vet take a look in person to make sure it isn't infected or there isn't another underlying issue going on. It is also a good idea to keep an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Arya at all times to prevent her from pawing at or rubbing the nose to allow it a chance to heal without further irritation.

When that layer of tissue becomes exposed like that, they can be more at risk of developing infections. For this reason, it would be indicated to have Boo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. However, I think a fungal infection like cryptococcus seems more likely and that would only respond to anti-fungal therapy. Another possibility is cancer such as squamous cell carcinoma. I recommend you consider having him reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. May be a biopsy could be done at this time since it has not improved. It is possible that she is suffering from an upper respiratory infection that may be viral and/or bacterial in origin. If you believe that she is not having difficulty breathing (ie, has a respiratory rate of less than 40 at rest and is not using her belly to help her breathe), she is eating normally, drinking, urinating and defecating normally, and has a normal energy level, you may be able to monitor her at home. Sometimes, keeping her in the bathroom while you run a hot shower can help clear her sinuses. If you notice any purulent (yellow, thick, foul-smelling) discharge from either her eyes or nose, I recommend having her seen by a veterinarian to be examined and treated. I hope this is helpful!

If he is all else is normal, you can try over the counter lysine- often sold at pharmacies and pet stores. It is an antiviral and can help for upper respiratory viruses. If this is a new finding and he seems not to feel well, it would be safer to take him in.... I would also take a warm washcloth and gently exfoliate his nose and continue to keep his eyes clean as you have. I hope this helps!
