Why is my 7-year-old cat's raw butt area dirty with black dots?

Feline blackheads often result when cats don't groom themselves properly but it could also be from overactive oil glands or certain yeast or bacterial infections. Stress and food allergies can also contribute to this issue. You can try these medicated wipes on the affected area once a day. The black spots could be due to flea dirt, and scratching the area could cause the bald spot. Fleas don't live on the cat, they actually live in the environment. They just jump on the cat to feed and then jump off, so he could have fleas even if you don't see any. Make sure he is up to date on his flea treatments if he's not. Should he be up to date on his flea treatments, then this could be due to an injury (the black spots could be dirt), or an infection of the skin. In this case, you have two options. You could take him into the vet to get it examined and diagnosed, or you could watch it. Should you chose to watch it, take him into the vet if it gets bigger, appears infected, or starts to bother him. I don't think any immediate treatment is needed should you chose to watch the area. Looks like bad hygiene to me. I wouldn't be worried about a parasite infestation or anything like that, because there are not any that really do this and nothing else appears like this. You can remove these by gently wiping with cotton and warm water. If it is a recurring problem, then I would suspect some intestinal disturbance causing loose stool. Loose stools can also lead to anal sac issues, so this may be related. It's best to have your vet examine him if this continues to be an issue. I hope that helps and all is well with Maihan.

Get some of the black specks on a clean white paper towel and add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Gently rub the black specks with the paper towel. If it looks reddish or rust colored, it could be flea feces indicating that Fosso has fleas. It’s also possible he sat in something and you can try washing it off. It could also just be environmental debris or sometimes the skin will produce dark pigmentation from general irritation. First test it to see if this is flea dirt. Collect a few of those dark colored flakes on a clean white paper towel and apply a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Then gently rub it around. If the towel turns reddish or rusty colored, it's flea feces (flea dirt). If it is, switch products. I recommend Revolution or Cheristan. If you must use something OTC, stick with name brand Frontline or Advantage. This could also be miliary dermatitis. Plus it means they bother him. I recommend to make an appointment to have him examined. In the mean time, prevention the licking by having Hugo wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Start Hugo on an omega fatty acid. I like one called Welactin. You might also consider changing his diet to one that is good for over-all skin health. Booker could have feline acne. You could clean it with an antiseborrheic shampoos for cats containing benzoyl peroxide and see if that helps. If not, he needs to be seen by a vet for treatment. He may need an oral or topical antibiotic and a short course of a corticosteroid, such as prednisolone. Make sure you don't see any fleas and continue his monthly flea medication. Using stainless steel food and water bowls instead of plastic may help too.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This looks like flea dirt. If you put "cat flea dirt" into a Google search you will see many photos that resemble this. I suggest you get her a GOOD flea prevention and treat your house and/or yard for fleas. You can bathe her if she will let you with Dawn dish soap. Use the dish soap sparingly as it is very concentrated. Be sure to rinse it off thoroughly. You should only need to bathe her once. Bathe her either 24 hour before OR after applying the topical flea medication. If you can't bathe her, don't worry too much about it. Once the medication kicks in and you treat the environment her clinical signs will resolve.
