My cat has black dots and scratches a lot. Is it fleas? What do I do?

My cat scratches a lot and these small black dots are on her back in different spots. What can I do for her and what are they? Can I send a picture? Thank you

This looks like flea dirt. If you put "cat flea dirt" into a Google search you will see many photos that resemble this.

I suggest you get her a GOOD flea prevention and treat your house and/or yard for fleas. You can bathe her if she will let you with Dawn dish soap. Use the dish soap sparingly as it is very concentrated. Be sure to rinse it off thoroughly. You should only need to bathe her once. Bathe her either 24 hour before OR after applying the topical flea medication. If you can't bathe her, don't worry too much about it. Once the medication kicks in and you treat the environment her clinical signs will resolve. I have linked some products for you below:

Be sure to continue to use a topical flea prevention on her EVERY MONTH. Watch her poop closely in the coming months as often cats will get tapeworms from ingesting fleas. If you see any worms (look like grains of rice) on her poop or around her anus you should take her to your vet to get a dewormer.

    From the picture, it looks like the black dots are probably flea dirt (this is like the poop that fleas leave after feeding). Fleas are also a common cause of itching and scratching in cats. It can take several months of treatment to completely get rid of fleas, and the prescription flea preventatives available from your vet will help a little better than the ones over the counter.     Thank you for providing pictures of Sylvia! Yes, it does look like there is flea dirt, and I can give you a flea treatment program for her. First, I would give her Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home.

    As for the dandruff, she could have dry skin from the fleas. You can find a vitamin E supplement to give her to see if that helps with the dry skin. Good luck!

Why does my cat have sore skin and black dots despite flea meds?
Hello, my name is Dr. Shines and I am happy to help. I agree that does look suspicious for flea dirt. It could also just be environmental debris or sometimes the skin will produce dark pigmentation from general irritation. First test it to see if this is flea dirt. Collect a few of those dark colored flakes on a clean white paper towel and apply a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. Then gently rub it around. If the towel turns reddish or rusty colored, it's flea feces (flea dirt). If it is, switch products. I recommend Revolution or Cheristan. If you must use something OTC, stick with name brand Frontline or Advantage. This could also be miliary dermatitis. Plus it means they bother him. I recommend to make an appointment to have him examined. In the mean time, prevention the licking by having Hugo wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Start Hugo on an omega fatty acid. I like one called Welactin. You might also consider changing his diet to one that is good for over-all skin health. The two brands I recommend are Royal Canin and Nutro. Note it will take about 6 weeks for the supplement/diet to fully kick in. I hope this helps and please feel free to reach out any time.

My dog has reddish-black spots. Is it flea dirt, a rash, or something else?
Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to see the skin in your pictures but it looks like a rash or comedones. If the reddish black things on her skin flakes off or are loose, wet them on a white tissue. If they melt away to a red streak that is flea poop. Flea dips and shampoos are NOT preventatives for fleas and the fleas that hatch on the carpet will jump right back on the pet. Fleas do not lay eggs on the pet but on the carpet. Bed bugs do not live on animals. I recommend a flea preventative like oral Nexgard, Simparica, Bravecto or topical Advantix ii or the Seresto collar. If there are no live fleas or flea dirt then she likely has a secondary skin infection or rash from an allergic reaction the the fleas. I would have her seen by your Vet so she can be provided relief. Also it looks like she has a paw infection which could be from environmental or food allergies. Good luck!

Hello, I am sorry to hear about Luna. It is possible that the debris you are seeing on her fur could be flea dirt, a byproduct that is present when animals have fleas. If Luna is not currently on a flea product I would recommend applying a topical product designed specifically for cats. If the debris does not resolve or gets worse having Luna seen by your veterinarian to make sure there are no other abnormalities on her skin is reasonable. Hope this helps, good luck!

Feline blackheads often result when cats don't groom themselves properly but it could also be from overactive oil glands or certain yeast or bacterial infections. Cat has scabs, itching. Miliary dermatitis? What to do without a vet?
Hi there and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! When you are petting her and your feel little seeds or what feels like little millet seeds, then it is very possible she could have miliary dermatitis. The #1 cause of military dermatitis is actually an allergy to fleas. It is only takes one flea to induce a flea allergy and the adult fleas can be hard to spot! Eggs and larva can be hard to see as well. Fleas find cracks and crevices to enter your home making household cats susceptible to acquiring fleas. If going to a vet is not an option, you can try bathing her in dawn dish soap (that will get rid of the adult fleas). You can then purchase an OTC flea treatment and preventative product such as Frontline Plus or Advantage to use monthly to ensure your are taking care of the entire life cycle of the flea. If the itching does not subside in a few weeks with the flea preventative, then it may be possible she has another environmental allergy or a food allergy, but I would rule out an allergy to fleas first. :) Thank you so much for your question and I wish you and Ishiban the very best!

I would apply it once a day in the beginning and once the clinical signs start to dissipate you can then go to every 2 or 3 days. Continue use until all the bumps on the skin are gone. My cat just had a flea bath. What are these red dots on the cloth?
Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Sonny does have fleas. The tiny red dots are flea poops (dried blood) that are now wet/rehydrated. I recommend contacting your vet for flea prevention medication to use every 30 days. Over the counter products don’t work and can be dangerous for cats. If you use a veterinary products you won’t need flea collars or flea baths (which also don’t work). You need to treat all pets in the home every 30 days. You should also get a home treatment, follow the directions and vacuum all flooring and surfaces well then throw out the bag. If you do this every 30 days as directed you should be flea free in 3-4 months. Good luck and kisses to Sonny!
