My cat has a rash on her face and lip area. What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Boo. Her sores look very irritated. They appear too raw for a topical ointment. She should see her veterinarian as she will likely need an oral antibiotic and potentially a medication to control any itching. In cats, I worry about allergies, ringworm, mites or even fleas with skin disease. Even without going outdoors, she could potentially contract any of these conditions. I hope this information helps!

I am very sorry that Kitty has his sore near her lip. Thank you for proving pictures, it is difficult to know precisely what caused this lesion it may have been a cat scratch, a traumatic puncture from for example a fence, or possible a primary skin like feline acne, or allergic disease. At this stage it appears to be slightly crusted and inflamed and I would suggest a trip to the veterinarian. The vet will most likely clean the wound and debris any necrotic material. The vet may also send home pain relief, anti inflammatory medications and / or antibiotics. The vet will also be able examine the area and reach a diagnosis. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly a focal infection though it is difficult to know without an examination of the area. If this is a superficial rash, you can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see that Rissoto has reddened areas above her lips, which appear to be ulcers. This can be caused by an infection or certain autoimmune disorders such as lupus. Similar lesions can be found inside the mouth, and may be causing Rissoto's breath to smell bad. I recommend having this looked at by Rissoto's vet to rule out autoimmune disease. In the meantime, I recommend trying to keep the area as clean as possible, and making sure that Rissoto's bowls are clean as small scratches in the bowls can harbor bacteria. There may be some underlying dental problems but that would require a veterinarian exam. There isn't anything over the counter that you could apply that would resolve this issue. It looks fairly widespread and topical antibiotic cream will be unlikely to resolve this issue. Plus it could be fungal or some other process that a vet would need to assess. I'm sorry but as soon as you are able it would be best to get him in. It will likely cost less when you address the problem sooner than later too. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Based on its appearance, that resembles a hot spot, or a moist-dermatitis brought about by licking. If it is at the base of the tail, this is a common place for cats to have a flea allergy/infection. I recommend having Baloo seen by a veterinarian who can perform a skin scrape test/cytology to see if there is evidence of secondary bacterial infection and/or other types of external parasites, such as fleas or mites. Baloo will need to wear an Elizabethan collar so that he does not continue to lick at this area and cause further trauma. He will also need to be on monthly topical flea and tick preventatives, purchased from your veterinarian. Flea and tick products that are available in food and pet stores are NOT effective OR safe for use on cats or dogs. I hope this is helpful!
