My cat has rare cancer. Where can I find info and what to expect?

My cat has been diagnosed with myxoid mesenchymal cell sarcoma. A very rare cancer apparently. I would just like to know where I can find some. Reading on it and what to expect. Thanks

This is a very rare sarcoma. I haven't personally diagnosed a cat or a dog with this cancer. The best place to get information is from a Veterinary Oncologist. There are online sources and journals for Veterinarians but non-Veterinarians can not access them. If you are in the medical field you can do Pubmed searches for journals. If I was you I would ask my Vet to print information off VIN (Veterinary Information Network) for you. But I can honestly tell you that there won't be a lot of information. We extrapolate all oncology treatments from human medicine. What you are going to find is experimental treatments and little information on prognosis.

Treatment and prognosis will likely be based on the grade on biopsy. Further excision, radiation and possibly chemo are treatment options. I think the best thing for you and Sox is to set up a consult with a Veterinary Oncologist.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Phoebe! Lymphoma is a diffuse cancer. It usually isn't a solitary mass but is throughout the entire organ. In Phoebe's case all her lung tissue. So Lymphoma is treated with chemotherapy not surgery usually. Since you are willing to treat, ask for a lung aspirate or biopsy. They can biopsy the lung, culture it for bacteria and do a fungal culture. Sometimes you have to be the health advocate for your pet! It's not an easy surgery and aspirates are risky. But if you want to know what is going on then you should try to get an answer. Also since you have been seeing a specialist maybe they can use a scope to get the samples. What's the outlook for my FIV+ cat after mast cell tumor removal?

I'm so sorry other that! It sounds like he's been through a lot. a lot depends on what the biopsy results show, unfortunately its very hard to speculate without that information, other than to say that his prognosis is more guarded since he is FIV +. What chemotherapy options are available for my cat's SCC?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no standard of care established chemotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma in cats. However, most recently we have been using doxorubicin and Palladia. Assuming that you are referring to the oral form of squamous cell carcinoma, this is a highly aggressive form of disease that does not tend to respond to therapy well. Good luck!

My cat has an oozing, bleeding face spot. Is it SCC or a tumor?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a malignant tumor unfortunately. Cats are very well known for having a mouth tumor called squamous cell carcinoma which carries a poor prognosis. However, it could still be something else and this is quite inside of the mouth unless there is also tumor on the inside. The only way to know is by doing some sampling via fine needle aspiration or possibly a biopsy. If squamous cell carcinoma is confirmed, it is not likely at all to respond to steroids or antibiotics much other than mild decrease in inflammation. Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma is limited by how aggressive this tumor is though sometimes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are options. Sorry for the sad news. What's the best cancer treatment for an old cat with kidney disease?

That's a complicated recommendation to give, especially since we don't know the type of cancer. It is possible that local excision could be curative. It is also possible that after local excision and a diagnosis from histopathology, we find that amputation is needed. In my opinion solely based on the pictures, I would probably remove the tumor and not try to get aggressive clean borders and wait to see what the tumor is before doing anything more drastic.

Hello. I’m so sorry to hear about your cat. I had a lovely long haired cat with lymphoma years ago. There is lymph tissue throughout the body. Before deciding on any types of surgery, it is beneficial to know just how extensive her cancer is. If she, for example, has a section of intestinal tract with a tumor or a couple of tumors, that area can be removed. However, if it seems that the cancer is already metastasized to liver, spleen, lungs, etc. , her prognosis would change and possibly surgery would not be if much benefit. A treatment plan if surgery/ chemotherapy / both can be arrived at after more information is collected.

My dog has an oral tumor. What are the treatment options and life expectancy?

Based on these reports, I would recommend a referral to an oncologist to talk about treatment options for this cancerous mass. These types of tumors can be quite aggressive and may involve surgical debulking of the mass in addition to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. I would discuss this with the veterinarian that performed these diagnostics in regards to who he / she would recommend for an oncologist so that you can discuss your options for Tiny.
