My cat's breathing rapidly, eyes tearing, and head twitching. Why?

My cat is breathing rapidly and has tears in her eyes and did this wierd head twithing thing

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jute Paw!

If Jute Paw is breathing rapidly she needs to see a Vet today on Emergency. Causes of trouble breathing are: feline asthma, congestive heart failure, cancer, fever.

She may be producing excessive tears secondary to a viral infection. The head twitching could be from dehydration, low blood pressure, a seizure or low blood sugar.

Based on your description of Jute Paw, I recommend immediate veterinary care today.

I'm so sorry that Jute Paw doesn't seem to be acting normally and worrying you. Tearing can be normal with some cats, or can indicate an infection or irritation to the eye. Her twitching can be caused by a number of varied underlying problems, such as seizure, dental disease, or even an ear infection. Without an exam it is really difficult to tell what is going on. I am concerned about the rapid breathing. I would take her to your vet as soon as possible as this may be an emergency, especially if she seems like she is in distress. I would also try to video the head twitching if it is episodic as this can help your veterinarian determine what is going on with her. I hope that Jute Paw is okay and it is nothing serious, but I think a visit to your vet to have her checked out is the best thing to do! Good luck!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! An elevated respiratory rate can be caused by heart disease or lung disease and can be an indication of difficulty breathing. High blood pressure can be secondary to heart disease and occasionally thyroid issues, both of which can be controlled with medications. I recommend having Molly seen by her vet as soon as possible, as this can progress quickly to pulmonary edema and even heart failure. She may need to be seen by a veterinary cardiologist for a second opinion and titration of medications.

The skin twitching and running can be a sign of fleas or skin irritation, and occasionally cats will display an extreme version of this with feline hyperesthesia syndrome. The open mouth breathing is a little concerning - this is usually a sign of cardiac or respiratory disease although occasionally some cats will breathe with their mouths open when they are very excited. If you see any labored breathing or the open mouth breathing continues I’d recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian.

Hello, sorry to hear about Jezzie. If she is having a hard time breathing then I would definitely take her to your veterinarian immediately. You should be monitoring for a rapid respiratory rate, open mouth breathing, increased respiratory effort (using her belly to breathe), and collapse. These are all signs that Jezzie may not be obtaining enough oxygen and may need emergency medical attention. One big concern in cats that have respiratory disease such as feline asthma is that they can develop respiratory crisis which could be life threatening. Therefore, any sings of respiratory disease warrants prompt veterinary evaluation. Please have Jezzie evaluated by your veterinarian if she continues to sneeze or an emergency veterinarian if she is having a hard time breathing or is showing any of the signs listed above. My cat has head tilt, twitching eyes, and is growling. What's happening?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tinsel! She needs to see your Vet when they open. It sounds like she is having a Vestibular event, this is when the balance center is off and they feel like the world is spinning. They can see but the abnormal eye twitching is called nystagmus. The most common cause in a young kitten is a deep ear infection or a nasopharyngeal polyp. She is growling because she is scared and stressed. Be careful and do not get bit. Use a towel or large blanket to get her in the carrier. Gently place it over her body and scoop her up and put her in the carrier. I wish you the best!

My kitten is hiding, breathing strangely, and has a low pulse.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is considered very abnormal in a cat. Abnormal breathing in a cat can occur from conditions such as pneumonia, heart failure, asthma, bronchitis, among other possibilities. If her pulse (not respiratory rate) really is 70 bpm as you pointed out that is very abnormal for a cat and at the same time even if it was her respiratory rate it would also be abnormal. For that reason, I highly recommend that you have Marciella evaluated by your local emergency clinic or your veterinarian if open as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include chest radiographs. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Good luck!
