My cat quacks, gags after eating, won't eat or drink. What's wrong?

She probably has swollen lymph nodes from a sore throat or cold. She may have a mild fever causing the lethargy. I would warm the wet food, have fresh water available and let her rest. If she gets worse then a veterinary exam is recommended. Usually they will recover from a cold in a week or so. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, I would recommend taking Maise in to see her veterinarian soon. It is possible Maise may actually be coughing. This can be due to an upper respiratory infection, throat polyp, feline asthma, or a heart condition. Your veterinarian will do an examine and carefully listen to her lungs and heart. An x-ray may be recommended as well to get a better view of the heart and lungs. Treatment will then depend on the diagnosis. In the mean time, you can try a humidifier in areas where Maise spends the most time as this may help a bit. I hope this helps!

Cats cannot go more than a few days without eating. They will start by doing a physical exam and will likely recommend lab work to see how her organs are functioning and the status of her red and white blood cells. They may also run a thyroid test to determine if it’s over-active. The vet may need to take radiographs of her abdomen to rule out a foreign object or other abnormalities. It could be her throat is a little irritated leading to the coughing, but it could also be a sign she is starting to get sick. I would keep an eye on her for the next couple of days. If the coughing increases in occurrence, she has a loss of appetite, has discharge from her nose, sounds congested, or is lethargic, then you should be concerned and have her seen by a vet asap. It sounds as if your cat is trying to cough up a hair ball or something similar. I would recommend feeding her a food that is formulated for hair balls and/or try giving her Laxatone daily to help the hair balls pass on their own. If the problems persists you should have her checked by a veterinarian to make sure nothing else is going on.

AT her age there may be an infection or mild obstruction causing the problem. If there is no improvement, then she may need to be sedated to get xrays on her neck and throat and a good exam down her throat to check for anything abnormal. If there was something irritating it at one point, then this will be evident and they can adjust medicine to help get her better.
