My cat gags like a hairball, but nothing comes up. Call vet?

It could be her throat is a little irritated leading to the coughing, but it could also be a sign she is starting to get sick. I would keep an eye on her for the next couple of days. If the coughing increases in occurrence, she has a loss of appetite, has discharge from her nose, sounds congested, or is lethargic, then you should be concerned and have her seen by a vet asap. If the cough continues over 48-72 hours without change, I would also have her checked out by a vet to be safe. I hope this helps!

Cats can vomit for a number of reasons, including trying to vomit a hairball, eating something they shouldn't have, gastrointestinal obstruction, infection, inflammation, or even cancer. From the information you provided, my concern is that Mittens may have aspirated (taken fluid into the lungs) during one of these vomiting episodes, and is now coughing as a result. Aspiration pneumonia can be a scary thing in cats, and especially if Mittens is not acting himself or wanting to eat, I would recommend bringing him to your veterinarian to be examined. If your veterinarian determines that he has abnormal lung sounds, he/she may recommend blood work and chest x-rays to look for evidence of pneumonia. If present, they will likely start Mittens on some antibiotics. There are other possibilities for Mitten's cough including bronchitis or an upper airway infection, which should also be managed by a veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

This is not likely to be due to a hairball. Coughing can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Max evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Hello. If Pepper has been doing this for a while, it is time to let your veterinarian evaluate her. I wonder if she is actually coughing ( which can sound like gagging in cats ), & if she may have some degree of asthma or bronchitis. There really is not much you can do at home that is safe. Coughing and gagging, especially when asleep, is a concerning sign. It may be that something is stuck in Hailey's throat. Other possible causes can include respiratory or lung issues, asthma, illness, heart problems, parasites and more. Having your vet examine Hailey is best to determine the underlying cause and get help.

It could be an upper respiratory infection caused by a virus or bacteria or could be evidence of feline asthma, a heart condition, or other lung, airway, or cardiovascular conditions. Your veterinarian may recommend x-rays to help evaluate the heart and lungs further and may recommend antibiotics or other medications as needed. I'm sorry Sacha isn't feeling well. There are several possibilities for respiratory disease in cats. Cats can develop asthma, get heartworms or have allergic bronchitis. Any of these conditions require a trip to the vet for diagnosis. Especially if you feel she is having trouble breathing please take her soon before this turns into an emergency.
