Can PlaqueOff powder for cats cause hyperthyroidism from iodine?

I would use this product only under the direct supervision of Sweetie's vet. The concern with seaweed, particularly in older cats, is that it is high in both sodium and iodine, which can exacerbate existing heart and thyroid conditions. I have not read any specific reports as to the effect of seaweed on the kidneys. The goal of this product is to keep tartar minimal on the crowns of teeth, but it does not slow or stop diseases under the gumline. As a result, I am not personally convinced of its efficacy.

We currently use the powder formulation for dogs and cats but if they have treats for cats this should be absolutely safe to try. Unfortunately the only food that will have a chance of working on its own it’s Hill’s. The other brands have not been formulated and studied with the same purpose. It is not the gold standard treatment for Hyperthyroidism but might work in some specific cases. Hyperthyroidism is caused by a tumour of the thyroid gland, and although benign can’t be left untreated. My personal recommendation would be to discuss other treatment options which might be more appropriate given Bob’s underlying allergies and given his relatively young age. Hope this helps !

Usually cats do well with the radio active iodine therapy. There is a chance for them to become hypo thyroid meeting they would need thyroid supplementation after the treatment. But generally speaking most cats do very well and no further treatment is needed. However your veterinarian will need to make sure there's no other underlying issues such as early kidney disease prior to doing the radio active iodine therapy. If they do find other issues then your cat may not be a good candidate for that treatment but other treatments such as daily medication or even surgery to remove part of her thyroid gland might be options.

Perhaps you can get the math him is all in a tablet form to crush it into a fine powder and then mix it with any palatable substance that she likes and then squirt it in her mouth with a syringe. if she is borderline and symptomatic they can send a thyroid test that can test more than just the in house version for a more definitive complete answer. Also they do make a food tailored to hyperthyroid cats that can help maintain the thyroid level. It is not safe to do if the number it not high though and it has to be the only food she gets. It is called science diet Y/D. I would talk to your vet about sending off a complete thyroid panel prior to any changes

No that is uncommon. Many cats do not do well with diet changes and he certainly had a poor reaction to the food. Continue with his old diet. If you are unable to give oral medication you can have the medication made into a gel that you can rub on the ear flap where it will be absorbed through the skin.
