My cat only eats wet food and is picky about texture. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

Lately my cat has turned to an extremely finicky eater. He used to only eat dry food for 6 years until I started giving him half dry and half wet. I mix the wet and dry together. He now has no desire for dry food. He will eat all the wet food and leave the dry. I now have to blend all of his food together but if it is not the right texture, he won't eat it. What is going on? How can I get my cat to eat norm again? I don't want to force or starve him. HE DOES NOT HAVE A DENTAL ISSUE OR DISEASE.

Hello,

Cats can be very finicky eaters. Most truly healthy cats with no dental disease will not starve themselves of kibble if left with only that option. However, cats can seriously damage their liver if they go too long without eating, and some cats are both very finicky and very strong willed. You may just have to make your cat his special texture food.

I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
