My cat's persistent cough won't go away after medication. What's next?

If a round of antibiotics did not cure Tsuyu's cough, then it may not be caused by a bacteria. Other possible causes of cough include heart disease, lung parasites, allergies, asthma, fungal infections, pharyngeal polyp, among many other things. Poor Chip! If the doxycycline is not clearing up the coughing after a year, it's not likely to help much at this point. Don't stop any medication however without consulting your veterinarian. Chip needs to have a radiograph to check for signs of asthma or something in the chest pushing on the trachea. Heartworms can also cause coughing. They can be tricky to find but a blood test may help. I recommend to have Chip re-evaluated and these tests run if they have not already been done. It's important to figure out the cause. This is not likely to be due to a hairball. Coughing can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Max evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Hello. It could be bronchitis, feline asthma, a lung infection, heart disease or heart worms. Hi and thank you for using Petcoach. Unfortunately, there can be many possible reasons for a cat having a chronic cough, just as there are in people. Parasites can cause coughing in some cases, so it may be worth getting a broad spectrum dewormer and treating Jarbou. Other causes for coughing can be viral infection (feline upper respiratory complex), bacterial infection, foreign body or asthama/allergies/bronchitis. There really is no good way to know the difference without a vet exam and probably x-rays. Keep watch on his overall health and make sure that he continues to thrive, is on a good quality diet and deworming is a good start. Make sure there is no smoke, oils or other fumes present in his area. I would recommend having Oliver examined by your vet and have them take some x-rays of his chest. There are some infectious causes of coughing in cats that may improve with medications, but we can also see asthma in cats which would require different medications. Poor guy. I would first be inclined to ask for chest radiographs to be taken to look for internal causes for the cough such as bronchitis, heart disease or primary lung disease. I am not sure what kind of medication he was placed on, but for most coughs we typically will try an antibiotic first if it seems to be infectious and then go with more diagnostics if things don’t improve. I would also ask the vet to check for any abnormal lung or heart sounds on physical exam. I hope that you can get to the bottom of Pretty boys cough soon!
