My cat's cough is worsening after antibiotics. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

My cat max has been coughing for about 2 weeks now and we took him in about a week ago and they said that he was sick and they gave him an antibiotic shot. Im concerned it was not the correct treatment plan and that my cats symptoms are just getting worse. His coughs are a tad bit longer and i can tell its getting to him. I believe he has a hairball and we have tried the vaseline goo you give them and its not helping. I dont want to pay for xray IF THEY are NOT needed but IF SO i Would. Plz help

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am afraid that without diagnostics such as radiographs there is no way to tell what may be going on. This is not likely to be due to a hairball. Coughing can be a sign of many conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis, heart disease, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Max evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Good luck and have a good day!
