Why is my 11-year-old cat peeing a lot with strong-smelling urine?

Increased drinking in cats with a urine that has a strong odor is concerning for a couple possible medical issues, such as diabetes, a urinary tract infection, a kidney issue, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having Missy be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine if she has an underlying condition that needs to be addressed, have any diagnostic testing done (urinalysis, bloodwork, etc) and a treatment plan made if needed. Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your description of signs, I would strongly suspect that Flynn may have diabetes. This very commonly causes increased thirst and urination, sticky urine (from the sugar in the urine) and weight loss. Other common causes of weight loss and increased thirst and urination in cats are kidney disease and thyroid disease. I have seen many cats that have more than one of these diseases at the same time. I would strongly recommend taking Flynn to a veterinarian for blood work and urinalysis. This will be the first step in diagnosing his actual condition so that you know how to treat him. Older cats have a tendency to have problems with their kidneys as they get older. This can result in their kidneys not concentrating their urine as well, so it is more dilute and has less (or no) odor to it. Kidney disease can cause a number of problems, so I would recommend having your veterinarian evaluate Lilly and check a urine sample and blood work. Having more dilute urine can also predispose older cats to urinary tract infections, that will will be important to check for as well. If you have one available in your area, you might consider having a house call vet come to the house if Lilly does not do well going to the vet. Hello! I'm afraid it sounds like Kit T Kat may have diabetes, but unfortunately there is no home remedy for this! She needs to have some bloodwork done, and, if she has diabetes, may need to be on insulin. Sorry to hear about this! Hope you are able to take her in.

Diabetes is the most common cause of "sweet" urine smell due to the excess glucose that is filtered out. Occasionally UTI can alter the smell of the urine. I would recommend taking Hope to the vet to check out what is going on so she can get treatment, if needed.

I would be concerned about either diabetes or hyperthyroidism in Fuu. The symptoms you described can be seen with both of these diseases that usually affect older cats. I would recommend taking Fuu in to your vet to have some blood work performed. This simple test can distinguish between these two diseases. If she has diabetes she will need insulin injections daily and hyperthyroidism can be easily treated with a daily medication as well. Good luck!

Hello, sorry to hear about Felix. This could be a one time accident, however it could be an early sign of FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease) which may also be referred to as FIC (Feline idiopathic cystitis). Other causes of abnormal urinations include bladder stones, urinary tract infections, and crystals in the urine. If you note any more of these behavior, it will be beneficial to have Felix examined sooner rather than later. Some cats may develop severe inflammation of their bladder which can lead to an obstruction. In the interim, you should add wet food to his diet and ensure he has readily access to copious amounts of water. Hope this helps and best of luck.
