Yes, a UTI is always a possibility when a cat suddenly displays inappropriate urination. I would have Norah seen by a vet tomorrow for a physical exam, blood test, and urinalysis. These tests will help diagnose if she does have a UTI, and should she have one, the vet can prescribe medication to treat her. I know this is not ideal. If you are able to place a litter box up there I would. That way she is still urinating in a litter box at least. When you do have more room, I would create a space just for her. Put 2 litter boxes out for her, give her a place to look outside, places to hide and climb on also. I don't know if your veterinarian performed a urinalysis. If they did then I would think about doing a urine culture. A urinary tract infection does not always show up on blood work and a urine culture will give you an answer. Has your veterinarian prescribed behavioral medication? This sounds like a complicated situation that may benefit from a consult or multiple questions. I will address the urination. Inappropriate urination is most common in multiple cat households. I would recommend that the cats be tested for urinary infections first. If normal then start addressing behavior. Add 1 more litter box than the number of cats. Start watching closely for “bossy” cats or stressful type of situations. Are they seeing outside cats and peeing after they see them? Is anyone scared of being attacked at the litter box? Add feliway diffusers into the rooms they tend to urinate in. This can get you started. Then look into feline environmental enrichment ideas. Some cats with arthritis will stop using the litter box because it hurts too much to get in. I would also change the litter so that the old litter box has the new litter (if you haven't done so already). If the veterinarian did not test her urine, I would recommend having her urine tested to see if she is dealing with a urinary tract infection. If she has a UTI, she will need an antibiotic and potentially an anti-inflammatory. If her urine was tested and came back normal, I would recommend providing her with multiple litter boxes with different litter and consider the use of a product called Feliway, which can be found online or at your local pet store. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian. He could have something mild like a urinary tract infection but he can also have stones or crystals in his urine that is causing discomfort. They can check a urine to see if it is an infection or if there are crystals and he may need an X-ray if they are suspecting stones. It sounds like Belle has blood in her urine. This could be due to bacterial infection, idiopathic cystitis, crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Belle needs to go to the veterinarian tomorrow to get her urine checked. These conditions are uncomfortable so the doctor will give her pain medications and treatment. Most cats will generally go back to using the litter box once the infection is cleared. I hope she starts feeling better soon!
