Why is my 7-month-old cat peeing blood after negative tests?

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 7.6 lbs

Our cat has had blood in his urine for 4 weeks. He's been tested for infection with urinalysis and blood work, and had an X-ray. They don't have a definitive answer as to why he has bloody urine. He is eatin and drinking normally and playing. He's only 7 month, and he's due to be neutered, would that cause his issue?

This sounds quite frustrating for everyone involved! At this point, the most common causes of Greyson's bloody urine (UTI, kidney infection, crystals in the urine and bladder stones) have all been excluded. The other possibilities include a sterile cystitis (non-infectious bladder inflammation), urethral spasms or a bladder tumor (unlikely given his young age). Consider discussing medications that could decrease spasms in the urethra or anti-inflammatory medications to decrease bladder inflammation with your vet. Also make sure that Greyson is drinking plenty of water (water fountains or mixing water with canned foods can be helpful) because many causes of bloody urine can also be precursors to urethral obstructions, which can be life threatening. Poor guy. He likely has a urinary tract infection or cystitis (inflamed bladder usually due to stress). I would recommend taking him to your vet for a urine test to determine which is present so that he is treated appropriately. As long as he is otherwise acting normal and able to urinate at will, then it isn't considered an emergency at this point. Getting him seen on Monday or the day after should be ok. Possibilities to explain this finding include a urinary tract infection, urinary tract stones, inflammation of the urinary tract, among others. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Why is my cat peeing outside, drinking more, and has bloody urine?

Unfortunately you will not be able to just order an antibiotic online. This may not be a urinary tract infection and could be what we call a sterile cystitis. You could start by ensuring she is drinking plenty of water (recirculating water fountains help), switch to canned food and start a supplement called paxon or cranberry supplement treats for cats, which can be found online. If the symptoms are no better, the next step would be to have her seen by a veterinarian for testing and further treatment. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My cat has recurring UTIs, blood in urine, but tests are normal.

Hi, and thanks for your question. These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. I think an ultrasound is needed as more sensitive than the x rays to diagnose more sinister causes like tumors and certain type of urinary stones that may be not detectable with the x rays. Cat peeing blood with crystal history on urinary food. What to do?

Buddy is so handsome! Unfortunately, blood in the urine can be an indication of bladder stones, and inflammation of the bladder which can be extremely uncomfortable. Buddy may not be able to urinate, which can cause back up of urine in the kidneys and make him very sick. I recommend making sure that he has plenty of water to drink, but having him seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Blood in the urine can be the result of bladder stones or crystals in the urine, an infection, bladder cancer, a bleeding disorder or a condition known as idiopathic cystitis. This last condition is an inflammation in the bladder with no known cause. It is thought that stress can make it worse. Typically bloodwork, a urinalysis and x-rays will be done to determine which of these conditions may be the cause. Depending on why he has the blood in his urine, he may need to eat the diet longterm. He should eat it exclusively for it to be effective. I hope this information helps!
