My cat has pancreatitis. Are cranberries causing his vomiting?

Pancreatitis in cats more commonly occurs due to concurrent diseases (such as inflammatory bowel disease, cholangitis, cholangiohepatitis, diabetes mellitus, etc.) than due to high fat diets. Dogs commonly develop pancreatitis after eating high fat diets, but this not been shown to be the case with cats. There are also many other cats that develop pancreatitis idiopathically (i.e. we never determine why it happens). One guess to try to associate Bella's pancreatitis with the diet change would be that she may have developed vomiting from a fairly rapid diet transition. The vomiting may have caused a back flow of bile into the common bile duct, which also empties into the pancreatic duct. When back flow of bile occurs, it can introduce bacteria through the shared duct to the pancreas. This may be a stretch of a theory, but is possible. Before changing Bella back to her old diet, I would recommend waiting for further test results to determine if other diseases are present and indicating the need for a different prescription based diet. Since she has been ill, I would also recommend discussing her diet with her vet and taking a full 5-7 days to slowly transition to any new diet. I hope that she does well!

Hello, and thank you for your question. I suspect that ingesting this amount of cranberry, vitamin C and E is the cause of your kitty's vomiting and diarrhea. However, my research does not indicate any further toxicity concerns beyond gastrointestinal symptoms. If her symptoms continue over the next few hours, I would suggest taking her to the vet to check her electrolytes and provide symptomatic therapy for her diarrhea and vomiting. Pancreatitis rarely completely resolve, it can be managed (food is the most important part of the treatment) and your cat might often have relapses such as this one, every time he does he will need similar treatment, in cats i find pain killers important with pancreatitis as well as anti nausea drugs such as cerenia.

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. It can be caused secondary to any type of inflammation in the stomach or possible high fat diet. IF Olive ate cat poop than started vomiting. It is possible the vomiting cause pancreatitis but the poop just caused gastric upset. Pancreatitis can be mild where patient recovers fast or can be really severe where patient needs hospitalized. I have not personally seen a case of pancreatitis due to mold. However if the mold caused vomiting or diarrhea it is possible. It can affect the white blood cells in the body. Typically the wbc do increase with this disease because of inflammation. hope that helps

I typically include pain medication as well as an anti-nausea medication in my treatment plan. Pancreatitis can cause abdominal pain and he may not be eating due to nausea. It is also a good idea to have his cobalamin (vitamin B12) level measured in his blood. If this is cost prohibitive, most veterinarians will give an injection of this vitamin. It can help a lot. Pancreatitis is difficult to diagnose and is done by analyzing compatible clinical signs and lab test results. Cats with pancreatitis commonly experience lethargy, loss of appetite and occasionally vomit, but these clinical signs can also be caused by a variety of other conditions. Typical blood testing includes a CBC (red & white blood cell count and platelets), chemistry (to evaluate overall organ function, blood glucose and electrolytes), T4 (thyroid hormone), as well as a urinalysis (to evaluate kidney function and look for infection). If pancreatitis is still suspected, a blood test called an fPL can be done to either rule pancreatitis out or make you more suspicious of that as the diagnosis (this is not a conclusive test). Abdominal ultrasounds can be helpful to determine if the pancreas is inflamed or if other abnormalities are present, but these are not performed in all cases. Cats with pancreatitis commonly also have concurrent diseases - such as inflammatory bowel disease, cholangitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) or cholangiohepatitis (inflammation of the gallbladder and liver). Uncommonly, cats with pancreatitis can become diabetic if there is enough damage to the endocrine portion of the pancreas. There is no definitive treatment for pancreatitis. The goal is to manage Bella's clinical signs supportively (i.e. IV fluids, anti nausea medications, pain medications, etc.) as needed. Odds are that she has a reason for starting or not starting certain medications or diagnostics.
