My cat has a painful matted leg wound. Is it a bite? Need a vet?

Sounds like a bite wound or a puncture wound from something Skye could have snagged herself on while out and about. The wound needs to be explored, flushed, and possibly drained. Skye will very likely require some antibiotics in order to get better, as well as anti-inflammatory medication to control pain and/or fever if she has one. I would get her into the veterinarian in the morning at the very latest so that treatment can be instituted. The longer you wait, the worse the infection can become. Hope this makes sense.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is hard to say without seeing Coco, but it sounds like she might have an abscess that has burst. These require cleaning and flushing with sterile saline, and then require both pain medications as well as antibiotics to heal. Gentian Violet will not fix them. I would recommend taking Coco to the vet as soon as you can. Best of luck with Coco.

The skin over the wound may be dying due to the infection. I recommend cleaning the area with a hot, damp cloth to loosen the scab and encourage the puss to drain out. Then you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. If she won’t let you clean it because it’s to painful then take her in for pain medication and sedation so they can clean and treat the wound and infection. I would suspect that this could be from another cat, some other animal or a puncture wound from a sharp object. It sounds as though the lesion is infected with your description. I would recommend soaking the foot in a mixture of betadine and water until you have a light brown solution. Soak the foot with this solution twice daily for 10 minutes at a time. If the foot does not improve, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! It sounds like Cocoa has one or two abscesses....which are deep pockets of infection. Most of the time these are caused by fight wounds in cats, but there can be other causes such as impacted anal sacs. Cocoa is going to need to see your veterinarian to get a prescription antibiotic to resolve the infection. Your vet will also clean the wounds and if this is too painful, she may require some sedation. Please try to get her to your vet as soon as you can.

Hello I can't tell from the picture how deep that wound is but it does look infected and there's underlying tissue and possibly muscle exposed. I recommend takinh your cat to see a veterinarian as she could be licking at the site when you're not watching and causing further infection. It may need to be closed or the vet may decide it should stay open (with some infected wounds closing can cause an abscess to form) and put her on antibiotics and pain medication. She might also need an E collar to prevent her from licking the area further.

I don't know how severe it is, but if the bleeding cannot be stopped or you think Moya is in pain, I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible. If the wound is healing, I recommend trying to keep the area clean and dry. You should monitor the area for swelling or discharge as these may be sign of an infection. I hope this helps!
