My cat only eats Fancy Feast. Should I let him eat what he wants?

If Christian is doing well ont he Fancy Feast, I would just continue with this, as it is a safe food and as long as he doesn't have any other health issues should be fine if he is eating it well. I would, however, recommend having him examined by a vet to ensure there isn't a reason he stopped eating hard food such as oral pain, and also as a senior pet it is recommended to have a check up and bloodwork yearly. Canned/wet food is actually ideal for cats due to the fact that they often don't get enough water through drinking so the wet food is better for urinary tract healthy, but any time we have a change in appetite, it should be investigated!

Unfortunately, Fancy Feast has a higher amount of fat and salt in it, so it does cause cats to gain weight. I recommend feeding your other cats a dry kibble, there are light or diet options from Hill's available as well. Being overweight can cause diabetes and other medical conditions in cats, so it is definitely a good idea to have them lose their extra weight. The appropriate size of a cat is dependent upon their body structure. Some cats with a larger frame will be 17lbs at a healthy weight and some small framed cats are only 6lbs! If he is over weight, you may want him to lose weight. It is important to note that weight loss needs to be very slow in cats or they run the risk of developing a potentially deadly liver disease. Due to that fact, before you begin a weight loss program, I recommend to call Jazz's veterinarian to get an exact calculation of calories to feed every day. In my opinion, Fancy Feast is a mid range diet so it's not a bad diet for most cats. Pets love the taste and it does increase the water intake which is important. Most of the canned foods are also not high in calories so for most cats, this is a good thing. Some brands of food will contain higher quality proteins that are easier to digest. My favorite brand of pet food is Royal Canin. Most pets who eat this diet will generally have a reduction in stool production because it doesn't have a lot of fillers. If a food is meant specifically for kittens, it should state on the label that it is for kittens up to one year. Feeding Fancy Feast Classic isn't bad, but your kitten's primary diet should be kitten food, wet or dry. If you decide to go with a primarily dry diet, you can still feed the Fancy Feast as a treat.

It is very important for diabetics to eat a consistent diet each day in order to match insulin prescription to energy intake and demand. You should discuss your concerns with your vet as a new diet may require adjustment of her insulin requirement but if they will not eat the diabetic food then an acceptable, tasty alternative (preferably high protein and low carbohydrate) should be found as soon as possible!

Sweetiepie needs to eat cat food because it has certain amino acids needed for heart health that are not found in dog food. If she gets into it every once in a while, that's fine. Fancy Feast seems to offer a variety of flavors. It's not the best food but its not the worst and it's important she eats. Also, I recommend to have Sweetiepie examined by the veterinarian if you are noticing finicky eating. At her age, kidney disease and other health concerns become more common and finicky eating can be one of the first signs of a problem. I hope this helps.
