My cat purrs oddly, seems sick, has dry nose. Is it respiratory?

He may have an upper respiratory infection, which is quite common in cats. It is hard to say for sure without examining him myself. You can try using a humidifier to break up any mucous. As an alternative you can place him in the bathroom with the shower running for 5-10 minutes 2 x daily. However he ultimately will likely need antibiotics to clear up any bacterial infection that may be present. I would also recommend getting him on antiviral medication (I.e. lysine powder or gel from your local pet store or vet clinic) to treat for a suspected underlying viral infection. Sorry to hear Smoky isn't acting normally. If your current veterinarian hasn't performed diagnostics to back up his statements, I would consider taking him elsewhere in order to do a little more investigation since there have been persistent clinical signs. Abnormal breathing and increased nasal discharge could be an indicator of an upper respiratory infection, feline asthma, cardiopulmonary/cardiovascular disease, or a primary respiratory condition. X-rays of the chest would be the first and foremost diagnostic test to perform in order to rule some of these in/out. There are medical therapies as well that can be attempted instead of diagnostics, but if you would like to get down to the crux of the issue, the diagnostics would be preferable. Hi and thanks for posting! Common signs of an upper respiratory infection in cats may be sneezing, coughing, labored breathing or increased respiratory effort, nasal discharge, and ocular discharge. While having a dry nose may not necessarily mean anything significant, the nose being warmer than usual may indicate an elevated body temperature or fever. If Puma continues to have a very warm nose or is also experiencing other changes such as decreased appetite, lethargy, or is experiencing any of the above signs of an upper respiratory infection I indicated, you may want to take Puma into see his veterinarian for an exam and evaluation.

Poro Mau Mau! It could be that he is suffering from a respiratory infection causing his runny nose and bleary eyes, but it could also be allergies. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. But the runny nose could be the cause of his decrease in appetite. When cats can't smell their food, they won't eat. I recommend gently warming really smelly wet food such as sardine or fish based to tempt him to eat. You can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. Without knowing the cause of his systems, I do not recommend giving him any supplements as they may be the improper treatment for him. Have him seen by a vet first thing Monday. I hope this helps!

Upper and lower respiratory issues in cats are very worrisome. Cats are prone to getting asthma (causes wheezes), pneumonia (crackles heard in the lungs), and upper respiratory infections (crackles in the nasal passage). They can also get heart problems that lead to fluid build up in the lungs. I would highly recommend taking Prince to your local vet to get examined thoroughly, potential bloodwork and x-rays of his chest. We need more information on what is actually going on internally so that we can select the proper course of treatment for Prince to hopefuly get him back on his feet. I would try to get him in as soon as possible, because it often is a sign of a serious illness whenever a cat decides to refuse food. Cats are masters at hiding illness, so we must take these symptoms that Prince is showing right now, very seriously and get him treated right away. Young cats often have mild upper respiratory infections like feline herpesvirus that causes chronic sneezing, nasal and ocular discharge. If possible, you need to get your cat examined and tested for infectious diseases to know what you're dealing with. If it's a herpesvirus, these cats respond to the amino acid lyceine that you can buy at a health food store, or your vet may have a formulation in cat treats or paste form that is much tastier.
