My cat has a crackled purr, isn't eating, and is hiding. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My cat seems to be having a little bit of problems breathing, maybe. His purr is off and doesn't continually rumble but is very crackled. He also seems a little a times like he needs to throw up bc he will gag a little. But he also didn't eat dinner tonight. And right now he is huddled under a bead.

Upper and lower respiratory issues in cats are very worrisome. Cats are prone to getting asthma (causes wheezes), pneumonia (crackles heard in the lungs), and upper respiratory infections (crackles in the nasal passage). They can also get heart problems that lead to fluid build up in the lungs. I would highly recommend taking Prince to your local vet to get examined thoroughly, potential bloodwork and x-rays of his chest. We need more information on what is actually going on internally so that we can select the proper course of treatment for Prince to hopefuly get him back on his feet. I would try to get him in as soon as possible, because it often is a sign of a serious illness whenever a cat decides to refuse food. Cats are masters at hiding illness, so we must take these symptoms that Prince is showing right now, very seriously and get him treated right away. Best wishes with Prince and I hope that he feels better soon.

I would be concerned about a few different possibilities in your kitty. We would worry about respiratory infections, cardiac disease leading to respiratory problems as a result of fluid buildup in the lungs, and asthma which we can see in cats. I would recommend a veterinary exam as soon as possible. The vet can listen to your cat's heart and lungs and may recommend x-rays to better evaluate the chest. The treatment will depend on the underlying cause. If your cat develops respiratory distress/is having difficulty breathing (for example open mouth breathing, large excursions of the chest and abdomen when breathing, panting) this evening then a trip to the emergency vet is recommended.

I understand your concerns for Scuff! Fortunately, from the signs that you describe, a foreign body obstruction from plastic is unlikely, as significant vomiting and anorexia would be expected. Wheezy breathing and changes in purring can be caused by asthma, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, among others. While I understand Scuff's fear of the vet, in this case, that is the only way that he's going to be diagnosed and treated appropriately. Consider looking into mobile vets in your area to see if they can make house calls and also have a portable x-ray machine. It sounds as though Scuff will likely need to have chest x-rays to get to the bottom of his problem. I hope that all goes well!

Oh dear! Poor Prince. I'm afraid these are very concerning symptoms. This does sound like a life-threatening problem, so I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet tonight to be seen. If this isn't possible, then he needs to see your regular veterinarian first thing in the morning. He will likely need blood work and x-rays to help diagnose the problem and see what can be done to help.

I am sorry you are worried! The behavior you are describing does sound like he doesn't feel well- (sorry it says both Sampson and Lilly so I am not sure which cat you are referring to). Unfortunately it is a subtle, vague behavior that can be linked to many things (good thing you picked up on it!). Since he was around a cat with a respiratory infection that would be my first concern- he may be trying to fight it off, or possibly having early signs of it. Since he isn't using the box much I would be worried he might becoming dehydrated or have a fever- which both could be secondary to an upper respiratory virus or secondary infection. I think you are right to take him in, in case he needs further testing or therapy to feel better! I hope his helps!

That may be due to a pharyngeal/laryngeal inflammation, potentially due to a viral or bacterial infection. A check up would be needed to have a look inside his mouth and throat and spot any sign of it. Antibiotics may be needed.

My cat won't eat, breathes weird, stuffy nose. What can I do?

He may have an upper respiratory infection, which is quite common in cats. It is hard to say for sure without examining him myself. You can try using a humidifier to break up any mucous. As an alternative you can place him in the bathroom with the shower running for 5-10 minutes 2 x daily. However he ultimately will likely need antibiotics to clear up any bacterial infection that may be present. I would also recommend getting him on antiviral medication (I.e. lysine powder or gel from your local pet store or vet clinic) to treat for a suspected underlying viral infection. Hi. It is hard to say what this could be. It's possible to be an upper respiratory infection/irritation, allergies, congestion, cardiac, or other respiratory causes. I would get him seen in the morning. Good luck.
