My cat hasn't pooped in days. Is it megacolon? What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Galaxy! I recommend cisapride, lactulose and Royal canine fiber response for constipated cats. Sometimes with the prescription diet it eliminates the need for most medications. If she isn't eating I would have her seen today and deobstipated (sedate and remove all feces) before the weekend. Then get the cisaride and food started. Sometimes refractory cases need partial removal of their colons. I wish you the best!

It's possible it will pass but sometimes it can't. I recommend to call your vet and get a time line for when Dexter needs to come back in if he does not pass the stool. These cats often benefit from fluid therapy. In severe cases this needs to be IV but as a maintenance therapy, it could be subcutaneous which you may be able to do at home. These cats often benefit from a high fiber diet and I recommend Royal Canin Fiber Response. Many cats do very well on this diet. I recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian. Hello. Is Fluffy sitting in the litter box trying to poop? I am not sure what fibo syrup has in it ( tried to research this product & can not find the ingredients ), but we use a product called Miralax here. It is also known as polyethylene glycol 3350. We will give 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon with each meal of wet food. Try to increase fluid intake by offering chicken or beef stocks & broths, tuna water, & of course, fresh water. If Fluffy is eating, give her another 24 hours, but if she does not defecate, she may need professional help & you will need to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Hello! It sounds like Roxie may be experiencing constipation. There is a problem some cats get called "Megacolon", in which their large intestines slow down. This disease can be treated with a special diet and medications. Sometimes, underlying kidney disease can cause dehydration that leads to constipation. In Roxie's information, it states that she is 19 lbs. She is a very big kitty! Obesity can sometimes physically hinder the defecation process when it becomes difficult for the cat to appropriately bend over and posture. Weight loss may be something that could help Roxie with this issue as well. I would recommend having Roxie seen by a vet to find out what exactly is causing her to not be able to defecate fully. They will likely recommend bloodwork and x-rays to check her organ function and evaluate her intestinal tract. They will make treatment recommendations based on those findings. Poor Angel! This can be such a problem in older cats. You can add in some canned pumpkin (1 teaspoon a day) to help increase her fiber intake. Also, if you haven't already, I would talk to your vet about doing some abdominal x-rays. These will help the vet see how large the colon is and how much stool is present. Cats can get something called megacolon where the muscles in their colon don't work well and they get easily constipated. These cats usually need to be sedated and manually have some of the stool removed and then put on a drug called cisapride. Some cats will have to stay on this drug long term, but I have personally had good success with putting them on a food called Royal Canin GI Fiber Response and eventually getting them off cisapride and stool softeners. It is a prescription food so I would talk to your vet about it. Also, . Every cat is different and your vet will need to help guide you through this process. If your vet doesn't think she has megacolon then cisapride may not be needed but if she is REALLY backed up then she may still need to be sedated and have some feces removed to help her out. Hello, sorry to hear about Jones. He may be dehydrated and needs fluids or he may need an enema. Have your veterinarian examine him and decide wether or not Jones needs an enema. Cats can occasionally experience problems with defecation when they are dehydrated but occasionally, they can also have a disease known as megacolon. Hope this helps and best of luck.
