My cat hasn't pooped in 2 days and is uncomfortable. What should I do?

Hello. Is Fluffy sitting in the litter box trying to poop? I am not sure what fibo syrup has in it ( tried to research this product & can not find the ingredients ), but we use a product called Miralax here. It is also known as polyethylene glycol 3350. We will give 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon with each meal of wet food. Try to increase fluid intake by offering chicken or beef stocks & broths, tuna water, & of course, fresh water. If Fluffy is eating, give her another 24 hours, but if she does not defecate, she may need professional help & you will need to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Hi Rose, good question! Miralax powder is easier to give and very safe. You will have better luck with it versus docusate. I suggest you start by giving them 1/8 teaspoon mixed in a bit of canned food once a day. You can increase to twice a day if needed. You can even go up to 1/4 tsp once or twice a day but start out slow. The other thing you may want to do is to try to increase water consumption by getting them a water fountain to drink from. Many studies have shown that cats prefer to drink from running water and if offered a fountain they will drink more. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Hello. You can try feeding Leo 1/4 teaspoon of Miralax twice a day & forget about the cat laxative. Many veterinarians do not recommend giving this anymore because it rarely helps. The Miralax works much better. If Leo is not doing better after a day or so of the Miralax, please consider seeing your veterinarian to make sure nothing else is going on. For now, I wouldn't stress about knowing exactly which medication has helped Kiki - in truth, it's probably been a combination of all the different interventions. Cats who are prone to constipation often need constant adjustments in their management, so for now, if she's doing well, continue the miralax as your vet advised and touch base with them if her stools become hard or less frequent again. Sometimes cats may need to be on both meds for a time, or even switch foods entirely to a diet formulated for cats with constipation issues. So, there's probably not one "right" medication for her, and a therapy that worked this time might still need to be adjusted in the future. I have found the Royal Canin GI Fiber Response food to help immensely - you could ask your vet if that's an appropriate option if Kiki continues having bouts of constipation. Hope this helps!

You can also try ONE dose of miralax liquid (regular human strength. Give 1/4 tsp by mouth once. (If there are other things going on it could worsen dehydration so do NOT give more than one dose just in case). But the truth is, once Sapphire goes 24 hours without eating, it’s time to see the vet. At that point we have to consider something else like a fever, infection, injury, organ disease, toxin etc. Even if it is regular old constipation, an enema or stronger laxative may be needed. This sounds pretty normal. The colon doesn't necessarily have to be completely full for him to defecate. If you are cutting down his portions he may not have to defecate as much. You can continue to cut his portions down. He is definitely overweight at 16 pounds. I don't know if your vet suggested this but I would recommend you add some fiber into his diet - it is best to do this by using a high fiber prescription cat food like Hill's w/d or r/d. I personally would put him on one of those diets as his own source of food and not just use it as an additive. These diets will also make him lose weight. And he will be able to eat more instead of you cutting his regular food down until he is eating almost nothing. I suggest you speak to your vet about this. You can continue the Laxatone. Hello. Fortunately, this is not an emergency. Cat stool is usually pretty dry, so occasional blood is not unusual. I usually recommend 1/8 teaspoon of Miralax twice daily, but you can go up to 1/4 teaspoon twice daily for a few days. Too much Miralax can lead to electrolyte imbalances, so if the blood & dry stool continues, your veterinarian might want to put Lilly on some Lactulose. Do everything you can to increase the liquids taken in by Lilly, including tuna water, or low sodium broth added to food or offered separately along with fresh water.
