My cat isn't peeing or pooping after travel. How long can a cat go?

Poor Monty. If Monty seems lethargic, vomits, or gets into the position to urinate and does not produce any urine, then I would take him to the veterinarian immediately. However, since we know he prefers not to use a litterbox and had the stress of the move, that might be your explanation. If you have any idea where he used to like to urinate/defecate (grass, dirt, mulch, plants, etc), I would try to replicate that in the new yard since that is his preferred area to go. The other problem is that most cats want to have privacy, so he may not go in front of you (while on a leash). Since we are coming into a holiday weekend, I would recommend having your vet evaluate him tomorrow (presuming that they are open) if he does not urinate overnight tonight just to make sure that everything is OK. A cat can go up to 48 hours without pooping, meaning anything past 48 hrs is a cause for concern, especially if you see your pet straining to defecate and nothing coming out. Ideally every pet should have a bowel movement daily, however there can be some slight variations here depending on the GI transit time and diet. I would monitor for signs of straining and also vomiting, lethargy or lack of appetite which means that kitty should be seen for constipation/obstipation. There are also medications and supplements available through your vet (i.e. Laxatone or Lactulose) that can help keep the GI track moving along if this becomes a chronic issue. Also fiber supplementation can be discussed with your vet.

I would encourage her to drink and you may get more than 1 litter box to encourage her to use it. There is no set time frame, however a cat should poop at least once every two days (if it does not eat much) and it should urinate at least once daily. If your cat is not urinating at least once a day and not eliminating properly , it should be seen by a veterinarian for an exam. It may not be eating enough which in turn could be caused by a health condition.

Yes, I would be very concerned that Baby hasn't peed in two days. She could have peed elsewhere in the house from the stress of having all the company in the home, or she could be blocked from bladder stones. I would take her into a vet right away if you can't find any place in the home where she might have peed. It's not normal for a cat to not pee for two days, and if she is blocked from bladder stones, that is a medical emergency.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should offer a small amount of food about 3-4 times daily and in really small kittens, every few hours might be needed. Eliminations and the frequency thereof, are dependent on many things depending on food intake, type of food, water intake etc. As long as she is not straining and trying to poop, it could be up to another 24-36 hours. She is getting accustomed to her new and that is probably slowing up the fecal elimination process. Again, no straining to have a bowel movement usually means that everything is ok, especially if the kitten is eating and drinking normally. Just keep monitoring for a bowel movement and monitor behavior, appetite, etc. If things change and you are unsure have your veterinarian evaluate the kitten. I hope everything works out ok.

The lethargy you are seeing indicates a problem as well. My advice is to monitor her tonight, and if she is still lethargic in the morning, hasn't peed, and/or still hasn't pooped, take her into a vet first thing. I hope this helps!
