My cat isn't peeing after neuter, but spray marks. Is it a blockage?

HI there! I'm so sorry to hear about Gulbi's troubles. Although there can be some discomfort following a neuter, I would definitely keep a close eye on Gulbi. Male cats can have a condition where they are unable to pee. Often we will say a cat "is blocked". This is a medical emergency because when an animal cannot urinate, it can back up their kidneys, and cause them to become toxic, very sick, and possibly pass away. I would continue to watch Gulbi as you are. He needs to produce a nice stream of urine, and large quantities of urine in the litter box. If there is any straining, especially frequent straining, or just tiny circles of urine in the litter box, then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. He may need some pain medications, and if he already has some, he may need some additional ones. It may be helpful to put Gulbi in a small room by himself for a couple of days, like the bathroom, with his litter box. This way you can keep an eye on his litter box and the amount of urine he is putting out. If he is licking at his neuter area, I would pick up a cone from the pet store. Also important is to bring Gulbi to see the vet if there is any swelling, redness, or discharge, like pus, around his neuter site. I hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck!

It would be highly unusual for a kitten to have urinary complications after neutering. You are a good pet parent for monitoring him, but as long as he is interacting with you, interested in food, and is doing normal cat behaviors such as grooming I wouldn’t worry yet. If he’s repeatedly getting into and out of the litter box without producing anything, if he starts vocalizing in the box, or if there is bloody discharge from the surgical area take him right in.

Hello! I would recommend keeping his litter completely clean so you can monitor his urine output. A blocked cat will continue to return to the litter box, strain unproductively or only pass small amounts of urine that may be bloody, and often be vocalizing. If you notice any of these signs, he needs to be taken to a vet immediately to be assessed for possible blockage. Feeding wet food, fountains, and dripping sinks and good ways to encourage cats to drink more water. Urinary tract infections in cats are fairly uncommon. Usually the urinary disease is a result of a production of crystals or stones or a sterile inflammatory bladder disease. No this would not be completely normal and may be an indication of urinary tract inflammation. Increasing water/fluid intake by feeding a wet food is very helpful and ensure any dry food is formulated to reduce crystals and urinary issues such as a specialist neutered cat or urinary formula. Monitor closely for any pain, discomfort, increased frequency or blood which would need veterinary treatment. Severe cases can end up with complete obstruction so prevention is best

He is probably still suffering from an infection/inflammation and he probably received muscle relaxant medications which causes loss of control on the bladder. once the medication course is over and he is healed it will stop, but until then it's actually a good thing that he is peeing everywhere, it means he is not blocked anymore.

Yes, this can be normal. Urinary blockage effects a cat's entire system and can make them feel very poorly. When the catheter is removed there is usually a fair bit of inflammation due to the catheter having been in place. The fact that he is producing urine is a good sign. You want to see him continue and start to produce more and more. If he appears to get duller or stop urinating take him back to the vet.

Poor Oreo! After a blockage, cats might only urinate small amounts frequently, but as long as he's peeing, that's positive. I would expect to see some blood, as he has sustained trauma to his urethra with the blockage and subsequent unblocking. I would continue to monitor him very closely, as reblocking can occur 7-14 days from the time of discharge. This is because the urologic syndrome that led to blocking in the first place is still continuing and as long as the episode continues, blocking is a possibility. Any loss of appetite or vomiting should be reported to your veterinarian at once. If there is any concern about reblocking, your vet can determine fairly easily if the cat has re-blocked.
