My cat won't eat and refuses his collar. Is he anxious or sick?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Cats are notoriously good at hiding their signs of pain and illness. Often the only indication is a decrease in energy and appetite. Possible causes could include pancreatitis, systemic infection, gut parasites, or dental or abdominal pain. If her symptoms are not improving within the next 24 hours, I would recommend taking her to the vet. They can perform a full physical exam, checking for any areas of pain or discomfort, and check for fever and dehydration. They may recommend bloodwork and viral testing to pinpoint a diagnosis. At minimum, they can help rehydrate her if she is dehydrated, and offer medications to improve her appetite and comfort while searching for a diagnosis. In the meantime, offer her some other wet and dry food options in case she has just become picky with her food, and monitor her for any vomiting or diarrhea. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You may consider placing him in a separate area from the other cats for a few days with his regular food and water. Try the calming collar and the Feliway Spray (or the room plug ins work well too). You can also softened the food (or try a can of wet food) and heat it up a bit to bring out the flavor to entice him to eat a bit. If he still doesn't eat, there may be a medical reason why he is not eating and it may be a good idea for Oakley to see his veterinarian for an evaluation soon. Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Hi there and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh, I am sorry to hear about Oreo- sounds like he is not feeling well at all. It is hard to say exactly what is going on with Oreo without examining him first. If he hasn't moved from one location in a few days, this is very concerning and tells me Oreo may be very ill. There can be many causes for Oreo's symptoms. Drinking a lot of water lately is a sign of diabetes mellitus or kidney disease. If he has only urinated a couple times in the last 3 days, he could have a urinary plug or blockage. In any case, Oreo should be taken to his nearest emergency veterinary clinic ASAP to determine the cause of his illness so he can get better soon. There is really nothing you can at home to help- taking him to a veterinarian is the best thing for him. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Oreo. I hope he fells better soon.

Hello. I would definitely take the collar off for a bit & see if he relaxes without it. You can always put the collar back on if he will not leave the biopsy site alone. If he truly needs a collar, check with your local Petco or other pet supply to purchase one of the soft, cloth-like collars. They are much more comfortable & Whisker's may do better with one of these. But if he leaves the site alone, he may not need to wear anything at all. Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Joey hasn't been feeling well. Since you suspect that the Seresto collar may have been causing his issues, you did the right thing by taking the collar off and bathing him. However, his lethargy, eye discharge, and loss of appetite could also be due to a virus (gastrointestinal or causing an upper respiratory infection), kidney disease, or many other health conditions. I'm glad to hear that he's going to the vet tomorrow because his vet will be able to examine him and perform any necessary diagnostic testing. In the meantime, continue offering small frequent amounts of Pedialyte or water, as well as trying to tempt Joey to eat with either meat baby foods, boiled chicken breast, or canned cat foods. Warming up any of these foods for a few seconds can make their aroma more noticeable, which can be enticing to some cats. I hope this helps and that Joey feels better soon!

He could have a number of different things going on, one being either inflammatory bowel disease or a kidney problem. These are common causes of nausea and decreased appetite in an adult cats. Other possible causes are hairball, liver disease and pancreatitis. I would suggest getting him eeen by your vet and some bloodwork analysis done to help find out the underlying problem so that we know how best to treat Marco and get him well. Best wishes at the vet.
