My 20-year-old cat has a new lump under her fur. What is it?

A lump with hair loss around it could be caused by a number of different things. Buzz may have an abscess due to some type of wound, a localized inflammatory reaction or infection of some kind, or even some type of cyst or skin tumor. I would recommend having the lump checked by a vet when you are able to. He/she may be able to identify it based on its appearance and how it feels, or may recommend a simple test called a fine needle aspirate to find out for sure what it is. Buzz may need antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to treat the problem, or the lump may need to be surgically removed.

It is likely to be a small mass in the skin, it could be infection, a cyst or fatty lump. There is always a chance that it could be a type of cancer so I would keep a close eye on it. If it gets bigger or changes shape I would have the vet to test it to determine the exact type of mass.

This may be a ringworm lesion. Ringworm is a highly contagious fungal infection. You need to have Tin Tin seen by a vet for this lesion. The vet can diagnose if she does have ringworm and can treat her.

That could be a few things on Meow. Sometimes cats will get a little skin infection, if he goes outside that could be a healing fight wound or it could be something like a skin mass. Seeing that Rascal is 10 years old he is considered geriatric. At geriatric ages, we can typically find skin masses that are many times benign and not cancerous. However, there is a chance that it could be a cancerous tumor but without further testing it is very difficult to say. I would recommend having a veterinarian exam in the slump to get a better idea of what it could be. The vet can insert a small needle into the lump and look at the cells under a microscope to help determine what the lump could be. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
