Why are my cat's nails getting thick and tough? How can I trim them?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

My cats no matter what age, young , old seem to get thickening of their nails. I trim them every month or so depending on growth. I have several babies and it seems to happen to many of them. It sometimes is hard to trim because nails are tough. They do have and use several scratching posts including my doors

Hello, and thank you for your question. It is not abnormal for cats to have thick nails. There is no treatment I can think of to reduce the thickness, unfortunately.

It is important to keep the nails trimmed short, as you have been doing. If you notice the nails are getting frayed, or torn, then I would recommend taking them to the vet as there is a risk of infection and pain.

I hope this helps, and your kitties are otherwise doing well!
