Why are my cat's nails missing with dried blood on her paw?

If there's no bleeding you probably don't need to do anything else. It is rare for a broken toenail to become infected or cause problems. If Oreo seems painful or the nail beds do start bleeding you should contact your vet.

Poor girl. This happens even to the best nail trimmers. He only thing that will successfully stop a bleeding nail every time is an over the counter Kwik Stop styptic powder from your local pet store. It is good that it has stopped bleeding; however, I would pick up some of this powder from the store first thing in the morning. Otherwise, place newspaper in the litter box tonight and monitor it until you go to bed. A light bandage can also be tried; however, cats in particular won't allow a bandage to stay in place. Hopefully things have stabilized for now and she will continue to do well until morning. Most of these nail bleeding situations are fine and don't result in serious complications (i.e. anemia). Hi and thanks for your request. The area can be clean to remove the dried blood with some salt water solution and then the new nail can be left growing by itself. Licking should be discouraged by applying a buster collar. The new nail should not have particular problems growing and eventually will displace the old one. It is possible that James has a small wound in between his toes or affecting one of his nails. It can sometimes be quite difficult to find a wound due the fur and often uncooperative nature of cats. It is also possible that James had a wound that has since closed, but there is dried blood residue on his fur that becomes more apparent when in the moist environment of the sink. If James begins favoring a paw or licking at a particular area, I would recommend that he is seen by a veterinarian. I would also monitor closely for any signs of other discharge or swelling associated with any of his paws.

Hi there. It looks like Mae ripped off her nail while she was out and about. There isn't much to do for that other than let the nail grow back. If she'll tolerate it, you can try soaking her feet in warm water with some epsom salts sprinkled in, this can be very soothing. Yes, it is best to wait and not clean it. Not only could it be painful for her but removing the scab/blood clot, etc could cause it to bleed again. I would wait at least a week to clean it but honestly, she will probably clean it herself when she is ready.
